The PGCBL has named Newark Pilots outfielder Aaron Whitley (Rochester) and Batavia Muckdogs pitcher Nolan Sparks (Rochester) as the PGCBL Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Whitley batted 10-for-13 in three games for the Pilots this week, including a 5-for-5 performance against the Jamestown last Monday, leading the team to an 8-5 victory. He raised his batting average for the season to .600 including a double, a triple and four RBIs.
Whitley, who hails from Niskayuna, N.Y. and attends the University of Rochester, hit .347 for his college this spring with five home runs and 21 RBIs.
Sparks of the Batavia Muckdogs was named the Pitcher of the Week. Sparks dominated the Geneva Red Wings in his lone start of the week, throwing six no-hit innings and struck out eight in an 8-0 victory. In 10 innings pitched for Batavia so far this season, he has allowed just one hit and one unearned run, with his ERA sitting at 0.00. He has also recorded 13 strikeouts in those 10 innings.
Sparks is from Aurora, Colo. and like Whitley, also attends University of Rochester. He made 12 appearances for the team this spring (11 starts) and pitched to a 3.10 ERA in 61 innings and struck out 61 hitters.
