It’s Opening Day for the PGCBL! Following the Watertown Rapids’ season-opening 7-1 victory against the Boonville Baseball Club to kick off the 2022 season on Thursday night, the remaining 14 of the league’s 16 teams will be in action on Friday.
The action gets going at 5:30 p.m. in Niagara Falls, as the Niagara Power face-off against the Jamestown Tarp Skunks. The Power will be kicking off their second season in the PGCBL.
At 6:30 p.m., the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs and the Oneonta Outlaws start up their seasons in Little Falls. The Outlaws are led by first-year Head Coach John Boland, while the DiamondDawgs will be looking to start off the season strong, going for their 10th consecutive season with a winning record in 2022.
At 7 p.m. the rest of the slate begins. The Amsterdam Mohawks, who had the best record in the 2021 regular season at 31-9, will travel to Glens Falls to face the Dragons. The Mohawks are ready to go with another slew of Power 5 players.
Down in Elmira, the Pioneers will host the Batavia Muckdogs. The Pioneers are expecting a huge crowd for opening night. The Muckdogs, who finished one game out of a playoff spot in 2021, will look to take the next step to make the playoffs for the first time in the team’s second season in the PGCBL.
The Utica Blue Sox will travel to Geneva to take on the Red Wings at McDonough Park. Both of these teams reached the PGCBL Playoffs in 2021, with Geneva advancing to the league semifinals.
At Falcon Park, the Auburn Doubledays will take on the Newark Pilots. Auburn advanced to the league semifinals in its first season in the PGCBL in 2021 and will be looking for even more success this season. Newark is led by first-year Head Coach Brian Greisman, who is coaching in the PGCBL for the first time in 2022.
Finally, in Saugerties, the defending champion Stallions will host the Albany Dutchmen at Cantine Field. The Stallions won the PGCBL Championship for the first time in franchise history in 2021 and look to defend their title with a crop of new players. The Dutchmen, a league stalwart year after year, will have a slew of Power 5 players that are sure to be exciting to watch.
The 2022 season is sure to be an exciting one, and Opening Day is just the start of a great season.
