It was a near-full slate of PGCBL action on Thursday night, with 12 teams in action. One team walked it off for a win, while two more picked up their first wins of the season. Read all about it!
Niagara Power 8, Newark Pilots 7
This game went into the ninth inning with Niagara holding a 7-5 lead, but Newark tied it up on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hazel Martinez (Cayuga CC) and an RBI single from Don Goodes (Adrian). However, Niagara took the win in the bottom half on a walk-off single from Payton Eeles (Cedarville), who also had a double earlier in the game. Martinez also had a home run for Newark.
Amsterdam Mohawks 7, Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 3
Amsterdam set the tone early by scoring six runs in the first two innings, five of them coming in the first. Hunter Thomas (Rend Lake CC) did the early damage, with a three-run home run as part of a four-RBI night. One inning later, Gage Miller (Bishop State CC) hit a home run for the Mohawks. Ernesto Polanco (Coastal Carolina) hit a home run for Mohawk Valley. With the win, Amsterdam is the last team in the league still undefeated, at 5-0.
Elmira Pioneers 2, Oneonta Outlaws 1
Elmira picked up their first win of the season with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly from Max Mandler (Seton Hill) to score Cooper Smith (Seton Hill). The Pioneers had scored their other run in the second inning via an RBI single from Lucas Berube (Northern Essex CC). On the mound, Hunter Kendall (Houghton) threw five innings of one-run ball, while Nick Reiser (Franklin Pierce) threw four innings of shutout relief.
Auburn Doubledays 3, Utica Blue Sox 2
Auburn handed Utica its first loss of the 2022 season by scoring all three of its runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Kobe Stenson (Siena) and Dylan Mackenzie (SUNY Cortland) scoring on a fielder’s choice. Matt Clark (Arizona) and Dewey Rhoden (Le Moyne) had RBI singles for Utica. Jake Danyluk (Oswego State) threw five innings of one-hit ball for the Doubledays.
Saugerties Stallions 10, Glens Falls Dragons 1
After a slow start, the Stallions picked up their first win of the season by scoring in five different innings, including four runs in the second inning to grab an early 5-0 lead. Brandon Fish (UMass-Lowell) had a two-run single in that second inning as part of a 2-for-5 night, while Alex Rodriguez (San Diego State) had an RBI double in the fourth inning as part of a 4-for-5 night, with two runs scored. Jahlani Rogers (Florida Gulf Coast) also had an RBI single.
Batavia Muckdogs 8, Geneva Red Wings 0
Nolan Sparks (Rochester) had a big night for the Muckdogs, throwing six hitless innings and striking out eight Geneva hitters. On the offensive side of the ball, the game was scoreless until the fifth inning, with Batavia scoring six runs in that frame to break it open. A bases loaded double from Alec Maag (Adelphi) brought in three runs, while two more doubles from Daniel Burroway (Alvin CC) and Bryan Belo (Lake Land) brought in the other three runs that frame.
The game between the Boonville Baseball Club and Albany Dutchmen was postponed due to inclement weather. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Albany on June 23.
