Jamestown Tarp Skunks 10, Niagara Power 3

The Tarp Skunks (3-0) took a 7-0 lead after two innings and cruised to a 10-3 win over the Power (2-2) in their home opener. During their three wins to begin the 2023 campaign, Jamestown has an average margin of victory of 7.7 runs.

Designated hitter Jake Kernodle (Princeton), third baseman Matt Thompson (Youngstown State) and extra hitter Henry Juan (Williams) recorded two RBI each for the Tarp Skunks, while left fielder Brayden Johnson (Wester Kentucky) reached base five times with a double and four walks. Johnson, Kernodle and Thompson each crossed the plate twice during the victory.

Right-hander Kasey Gilman (Princeton) started on the mound for Jamestown and held the visitors to two hits and one run in 3.1 innings, then left-hander Evan Chaffee (Alabama) was credited with the win after conceding zero hits, two walks and one run in 2.2 innings in relief. Lefty Andrew Ayers (St. Bonaventure) pitched the final 3.0 innings for Jamestown.

Niagara shortstop Billy Morris led the Power with two hits during the setback.

Jamestown will play another home game on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Batavia. The Power will also play at home on Thursday against Auburn at 11:00 a.m. The Power previously bested the DoubleDays by a score of 13-2 in their season opener on Saturday, June 3.

Amsterdam Mohawks 12, Utica Blue Sox 1

On Wednesday at Amsterdam’s Shuttleworth Park, the Mohawks broke the 0-0 tie with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then they added three more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take down the Blue Sox in seven innings via run rule.

After going 3 for 4 at the plate with three runs and two RBI during his season debut with the Mohawks on Tuesday against Watertown, third baseman Cam Gurney (Utah) was a perfect 3 for 3 at the dish on Thursday with a walk and two runs scored. Second baseman Gage Miller (Bishop State) delivered a game-high three RBI during his team’s sixth victory in six games, while first baseman Luke Longo (NJIT) and center fielder Jalen DeBose (Florida Atlantic) contributed two hits and two runs batted in each.

Both of Longo’s hits on Wednesday were doubles, giving him four extra-base hits on the season.

Miller and Longo both scored a run during the win, giving them seven runs scored each so far in 2023, which is the highest total in the PGCBL.

Right-handed pitcher Von Baker (Cornell) was credited with the win for Amsterdam after allowing zero hits, zero runs and one walk with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings in relief (he replaced the starting pitcher to begin the top of the third). Amsterdam used five pitchers on Thursday: Carson Cotugno (Wake Forest), Baker, Joe Gold (Boston College), Jack Seppings (Brown) and Jack Brodsky (Tampa) and collectively they gave up three hits and five walks with eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Utica designated hitter Josh Skowronski (Kentucky) provided the Blue Sox’s lone run with a sole home run in the top of the fifth.

The Mohawks have an average margin of victory of 8.3 runs during their six wins in 2023.

The Blue Sox will stay on the road for a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Mohawk Valley on Thursday, while Amsterdam will return to action on Friday with a noon meeting against the Lumberjacks in Boonville.

Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 6, Saugerties Stallions 1

Mohawk Valley pitchers Kevin Kell (Fairfield) and Aidan Colagrande (Fairfield) allowed just four combined hits in nine innings on Wednesday to lead the DiamondDawgs (3-2) to a 6-1 victory over the Saugerties Stallions (1-2) at Saugerties’ Cantine Veterans Memorial Field. Kell started on the mound and limited the home team to three hits, three walks and one run with five strikeouts through the first 5.0 innings. Colagrande was dominant out of the bullpen, tallying eight strikeouts in 4.0 innings while conceding just one hit, two walks and zero runs.

MV third baseman Chance Checca (Herkimer) and second baseman Ethan Valdez (Spring Hill) recorded two hits and an RBI each during the victory, while left fielder Owen Pincince (New Haven) tallied one hit, one RBI, one run scored and three walks.

Designated hitter/outfielder Sam Miller (Columbia) registered an RBI single for the DiamondDawgs on Wednesday, giving him a league-best 10 runs batted in through five games played so far this season. Pincince’s seven runs scored so far this season is tied for the most in the PGCBL.

Saugerties shortstop Carson Clark (Wright State) led the Stallions with two hits during the setback.

The DiamondDawgs will return home for a 6:30 p.m. matchup against the Utica Blue Sox on Thursday, while the Stallions will host Oneonta on Friday with a 7:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
