Five games were completed yesterday, while the matchup between Saugerties and Glens Falls, along with Jamestown vs. Geneva were both postponed.
Boonville Lumberjacks 4, Utica Blue Sox 3
The Lumberjacks (2-2) bounced back from a 4-2 home loss to Utica (2-3) on Sunday with a 4-3 win over the Blue Sox at Utica’s Donovan Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Lumberjacks scored all four of their runs in the top of the third inning with the help of a two-out two-run single from first baseman Dylan Mercedes (Mansfield). Mercedes then came around to score the final run of the frame on a single from designated hitter Hugo Kohnhorst (Mineral Area).
Right fielder Matthew Layton (Spartan Methodist) added a hit, an RBI and a run scored to the Boonville cause during the team’s second win of the campaign.
Lumberjacks starting right-handed pitcher Albert Bobadilla (Bloomfield) earned the win after allowing just two runs in 6.0 innings of work. Righty Ben Bohlman (Colby CC) tossed 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, then reigning East Division Pitcher of the Week Jacob Phillips (Guilford) registered the save after striking out two batters during a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
First baseman Will Shannon (Hillsdale) led the charge at the plate for Utica, tallying two hits, two walks and two runs batted in during the setback. Blue Sox left-handed pitcher Brandon Scott (Hillsdale) entered the game out of the bullpen to begin the top of the eighth inning, and he allowed two hits, one walk and zero runs with three strikeouts during the final 2.0 innings.
The Blue Sox trailed 4-0 after three innings, then they scored a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to make it 4-2. Right fielder Taylor Kaufman (Hamilton) ripped a two-out single to right field to drive in a run in the bottom of the eighth to cut his team’s deficit in half, but Boonville recorded the third out during the next at bat to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Back-to-back two-out singles from Utica in the bottom of the ninth put the game-winning run on first base, but Phillips recorded a strikeout to secure the win for Boonville.
The Blue Sox will hit the road to take on Amsterdam on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m., while the Lumberjacks will return home for a 6:45 p.m. matchup against Watertown on Thursday.
Elmira Pioneers 8, Newark Pilots 0
The Pioneers (2-2) earned a shutout victory over the Pilots (0-4) on Tuesday evening at Elmira’s Dunn Field.
Left-handed starting pitcher Devin Murray (Hillsdale) earned the win for Elmira after allowing just three hits, zero walks and zero runs with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Right-hander Christian Zilli (Seton Hill) conceded zero hits, zero runs and one walk with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings in relief, then lefty Nic Ficarro (Alvernia) held the visitors to one hit, one walk and zero runs during the final 2.0 frames to close out the win.
Second baseman Nick Bisaccia (Seton Hall) recorded a team-best two RBI to go along with a hit, a walk and a run scored for the Pioneers, while right fielder John Schroeder (Florida Atlantic) tallied a game-high two runs with a hit and a walk.
The Pioneers broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Bisaccia. Elmira scored two runs in the third, two more in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The Pioneers and the Pilots will play again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Colburn Park.
Niagara Power 3, Batavia Muckdogs 1
After losing a one-run game at Batavia (2-2) on Sunday, the Power (2-1) got some revenge on Tuesday with a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Muckdogs at Batavia’ Dwyer Stadium.
The contest was tied 1-1 after eight innings before Power third baseman Vincent Mauro (Niagara) delivered a two-run single in the top of the ninth to lift Niagara to a 3-1 victory. Niagara right-handed starting pitcher Bryan Addudle (Canisius) held the home team to just two hits, one run and one walk with four strikeouts through the first 5.0 innings, then Andrew Damiani (Niagara County) was dominant out of the bullpen, conceding just one hit, zero walks and zero runs with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Left-hander Zach Johnson recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save for the Power.
Niagara broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the second on an RBI double from center fielder Brett Johnson. Batavia tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from first baseman Henry Daniels (West Georgia).
The Power will take on Jamestown on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., while the Muckdogs travel to Auburn for a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the DoubleDays on Wednesday.
Amsterdam Mohawks 14, Watertown Rapids 2
The Mohawks put up 14 runs in six innings on Tuesday to improve to 5-0 in 2023. Right-hander Gio Conte (UCONN) was credited with the victory after throwing 3.0 innings in relief. Right-hander Zach Eldred (Brockport) started on the mound for Amsterdam and tallied five strikeouts while allowing two hits and zero runs in 2.0 innings of work.
Second baseman Gage Miller (Bishop State), third baseman Cam Gurney (Utah), first baseman Dylan Banner (Albany), right fielder Carlos Martinez (Pittsburgh), extra hitter Bryce Hubbard (Mississippi State) and center fielder Jalen DeBose (Florida Atlantic) each recorded two RBIs for Amsterdam during their fifth consecutive victory to begin their title defense. Gurney finished the contest with a game-high three hits and a game-high three runs scored.
Watertown shortstop Nick Mazzotta (Fairleigh Dickinson) recorded a team-best two hits for the Rapids, while first baseman Owen Parliament (Oswego) drove in both runs with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth.
Amsterdam will look to stay undefeated on Wednesday as they host Utica for a 6:45 p.m. matchup at Shuttleworth Park, while the Rapids will take Wednesday off before battling the Lumberjacks in Boonville on Thursday at 6:45 p.m.
Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 8, Oneonta Outlaws 6
A big first inning helped the DiamondDawgs (2-2) come away with a 8-6 win at home over Oneonta (1-3) despite a late comeback bid from the Outlaws.
The DiamondDagws put up five runs in the bottom of the first with the help of a leadoff home run from left fielder Owen Pincince (New Haven), and they took a 7-1 lead in the sixth following a solo home run from designated hitter Justin Hackett (Bryant) and another RBI from Pincince.
The Outlaws scored four runs in the top of the eighth with the help of a two-run home run from left fielder Jack Hopko (Rhode Island), then they trimmed their deficit to 8-6 with two outs in the top of the ninth following an Anthony Barone (Oswego State) RBI single, but MV relief pitcher Chris Palmer (Saint Rose) recorded a strikeout with runners on first and third to end the game and complete the six-out save.
DiamondDawgs left-handed pitcher Matt Alduino (Quinnipiac) earned the victory after compiling six strikeouts with four hits, four walks and one run allowed in 4.0 innings of work.
Hopko led all players with three hits to go along with one run, one walk and two RBI during the setback.
Mohawk Valley will return to action on Wednesday when they play a 7:05 p.m. contest at Saugerties. Oneonta will take Wednesday off before hosting Glens Falls on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
