There were three games played on Monday. Here are the recaps:
Albany Dutchmen 13, Glens Falls Dragons 2
The Dutchmen (3-2) used a big first inning to claim a 13-2 win over Glens Falls (1-2) on Monday to improve to 3-0 at home. Coming off a close loss at Saugerties on Sunday, Albany scored six runs in the bottom of the first against the Dragons, and they scored at least one run in each of the first five innings to end the contest in the seventh via run rule.
Albany extra hitter Will Plattner (Ole Miss) and second baseman Mike Talavera (HVCC) both recorded a game-high two runs batted in during the victory, while third baseman Brayden Childress (Warner) provided a team-best two hits.
Right-hander Aidan Nugent (Kankakee) started on the mound for Albany and conceded one hit, one run and four walks with a strikeout through the first 3.0 innings. Right-hander Grant Smeltzer (Fairfield) entered to begin the fourth inning and was credited with the win after completing 2.0 innings while allowing one hit, one run and two walks with a strikeout.
Righty Ryan Bates (Siena) tossed the sixth and seventh innings for the Dutchmen and allowed two hits, one walk and zero runs with a strikeout.
Third baseman Jack Griffin (Saint Rose) and second baseman/pitcher Zander Teator (Babson) both recorded two hits for the Dragons, accounting for all four of the team’s hits.
The Dragons will return to action on Tuesday when they host Saugerties for a contest at 7:00 p.m. Albany’s next game is on Wednesday, when they host Glens Falls again at Keenholts Park.
Jamestown Tarp Skunks 9, Newark Pilots 0
The Tarp Skunks (2-0) recorded their second straight victory over the Newark Pilots (0-3) on Monday begin the season. Once again playing at Newark’s Colburn Park, Jamestown broke the tie with four runs in the top of the second, then they tallied three in the sixth and two more in the top of the ninth.
Jamestown pitchers Patrick DeMarco (Ohio), Evan Berta (Fairfield) and Ryan Bilka (Wagner) surrendered just one total hit during the nine innings. DeMarco started the game and went 6.0 innings while allowing just one hit, zero walks and zero runs with three strikeouts. Berta conceded just two walks, zero hits, and zero runs with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings in relief, then Bilka delivered a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth with one strikeout.
Jamestown shortstop and leadoff hitter Grady Mee (Western Michigan) recorded a team-high three hits and a team-best two RBI to go along with a walk and a run scored.
First baseman Colin Houck (East Stroudsberg), extra hitter Ryan Mittelman (Tampa), left fielder Jared Muñoz (UMass), and second baseman Aidan Dunlap (Youngstown State) each tallied two hits for the Tarp Skunks. Muñoz and Dunlap both added a team-best two runs scored.
Newark catcher Dom Camera (Hofstra) reached base twice for the Pilots during the setback. He recorded their only hit of the game, as well as one of their two total walks.
The Tarp Skunks will play again on Tuesday at Geneva at 7:05 p.m. The Pilots will also be in action on Tuesday with a 6:35 p.m. battle at Elmira.
Amsterdam Mohawks 4, Oneonta Outlaws 1
After winning their first three games by a combined 24 runs, the Mohawks grinded out a 4-1 victory at Oneonta (1-2) on Monday to improve to 4-0 in 2023.
Designated hitter Dylan Banner (UAlbany) went 3-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI for Amsterdam, while first baseman Luke Longo (NJIT) added two hits and a run.
Oneonta catcher Christopher Baillargeon (Holy Cross) recorded a team-high two hits, including an RBI triple during the setback.
Amsterdam right-hander Brandon Peterson (NJIT) earned the win after allowing just two hits, four walks and one run with four strikeouts through the first 4.0 innings. Right-hander Josh Davis (Clemson) allowed just one hit, one walk and zero runs in 2.0 innings in relief, righty Colin Maloney (Rhode Island) tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning, then right-hander Ryan Taffe (Fairfield) recorded the six-out save with four strikeouts.
The Mohawks will return home for a 6:45 p.m. meeting with Watertown on Tuesday.
The Outlaws will travel to Mohawk Valley on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Veterans Memorial Park.
