Batavia Muckdogs 8, Niagara Power 7

The Muckdogs (2-1) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an infield single from shortstop Caleb Rodriguez (Kean) to earn an 8-7 victory over the visiting Niagara Power (1-1). It is the second one-run victory in as many days for the Muckdogs, who claimed a 5-4 win over Elmira during their home opener on Saturday.

Batavia right-hander Ryan Kinney (Xavier University of Louisiana) earned the victory on the mound for the Muckdogs after an outstanding outing out of the bullpen. Kinney entered the game to begin the sixth inning and went on to deliver three perfect frames before left-hander Rijnaldo Euson (Georgia Southwestern) tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth to earn the save.

Extra hitter Giuseppe Arcuri (Saint Leo) recorded a game-high three hits to go along with a run scored and two RBI during the victory for Batavia, while left fielder Matt DeStefano (Stony Brook) registered a game-high three runs batted in with the help of a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning.

Right-handers Alex Dzimian (D’Youville) and Tom Bednarski (Niagara) were both solid out of the bullpen for the Power, allowing just one run each in 6.1 combined innings.

The Power and the Muckdogs will meet again at Batavia’s Dwyer Stadium on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.

Utica Blue Sox 4, Boonville Lumberjacks 2

The Blue Sox (2-2) got a great start from right-hander Daly Skees (Hillsdale) on Sunday and scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 4-2 win over the Lumberjacks (1-2) at Boonville’s Robert Smith Sports Complex. Skees completed 6.0 innings of work while allowing just three hits, two walks and zero runs with five strikeouts. Righty Brandon Millan (Fort Lauderdale) recorded the save for Utica after stranding two runners on base during a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

Extra hitter Norris McClure (Spring Hill), designated hitter Andre Demetral (NIU) and third baseman Josh Skowronski (Kentucky) each delivered a team-high two hits during the victory for Utica, while Demetral and left fielder Wyatt Jensen (St. Thomas) both provided an RBI.

Boonville used just two pitchers during the contest. Right-hander Alden Halfinger (Salem) started on the mound for the Lumberjacks and allowed just two earned runs in 7.0 innings. Righty reliever Eli Snelson (Union) held the visitors to just one hit, one walk and zero runs with three strikeouts during the final 2.0 frames.

After Utica took a 4-0 lead in the seventh, Boonville cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run double from center fielder Marcus Smith (Cincinnati). Boonville brought the go-ahead run to the plate with zero outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Millan settled in and retired the next three batters to secure the win for the Blue Sox.

Utica and Boonville will play each other again on Tuesday at Utica’s Donovan Stadium at 10:30 a.m.

Geneva Red Wings 10, Newark Pilots 3

The Red Wings (1-1) bounced back from their season-opening loss to Auburn on Friday with a big win over the Pilots (0-2) on Sunday. Geneva shortstop Tyler Cerame (Finger Lakes) and catcher Ethan Swidler (Lafayette) recorded two hits, two runs and two RBI each and the Red Wings’ pitching staff allowed just one earned run during the nine innings.

Right-hander Joey Kasper (Iona) earned the victory for the Red Wings after allowing one earned run and one walk with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings in relief. Righty Kolby Mordecki (Plattsburgh) tallied five strikeouts with four hits and zero earned runs allowed in 3.0 innings out of the bullpen, then right-hander Nick Pappas (UMass Dartmouth) held the visitors to one hit, one walk and zero runs over the final 2.0 frames to close out the win for Geneva.

Center fielder Frank Vanzillotta (Brockport) and extra hitter Chris Ferara (Emerson) both recorded a team-best two hits for Newark during the setback. Ferara added a run scored and an RBI.

Geneva will remain at home for a 7:05 p.m. matchup against Jamestown on Tuesday, while Newark returns to action on Monday when they host the Tarp Skunks for a 7:05 p.m. battle at Colburn Park.

Watertown Rapids 8, Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 3

After dropping both games of their doubleheader at Albany on Saturday, the Rapids (2-3) bounced back at home with an 8-3 win over the DiamondDawgs (1-2) at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds Stadium.

Designated hitter Jax Miller (Walsh) and shortstop Nick Mazzotta (Farleigh Dickinson) tallied three hits, one run and two RBI each for Watertown during the victory. Nine different Watertown players recorded a hit on Sunday, and seven different players scored a run. The Rapids recorded seven extra-base hits, including three doubles from Miller.

Left-hander Cory Arthur (Anderson) earned the win for Watertown after going 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs with four strikeouts. Left fielder Nick Sturino (Fairfield), shortstop Justin Hackett (Bryant) and center fielder Jaden Ross (Hudson Valley) each contributed two hits for Mohawk Valley during the setback.

Mohawk Valley will have Monday off before hosting Oneonta at Veterans Memorial Park on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Rapids will also return to action on Tuesday with a 6:45 p.m. contest at Amsterdam.

Glens Falls Dragons 8, Oneonta Outlaws 5

The Dragons (1-1) triumphed in a close battle against the Outlaws (1-1) to claim their first victory of the 2023 campaign. After falling to the defending champions Amsterdam in their season opener on Friday, the Dragons scored twice in the bottom of the first on Sunday, then put up four runs in the fifth to give themselves enough run support to bring home the win. Glens Falls used eight different pitchers on Sunday, and the bullpen did not allow a run during the final three innings to secure the victory.

Glens Falls scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth via two-run singles from second baseman Colin Myers (St. Joseph’s) and catcher Anthony Macarelli (Ithaca).

Oneonta scored all five of their runs in the top of the sixth with the help of a two-run double from catcher Anthony Barone (Oswego).

GF right fielder Odilio Cespedes (Bryant and Stratton) tallied a game-high three hits during the victory and right-handed pitcher Harry Berezansky (Penn West) was credited with the win after tossing a scoreless frame in the top of the third. Right-hander Jedadiah Trudeau (Dominican) pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth with three strikeouts to end the game and secure the win for the Dragons.

Glens Falls will play their first road game of the 2023 campaign on Monday at Albany at 6:35 p.m. while the Outlaws will return home for a date with the Mohawks on Monday at 5:00 p.m.

Saugerties Stallions 5, Albany Dutchmen 3

The Saugerties Stallions (1-1) captured their first win of the 2023 season by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Sunday to defeat the Albany Dutchmen (2-2) by a score of 5-3.

Shortstop Damion Kenealy (Polk State) drove in the go-ahead run and the insurance run with a two-RBI single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Saugerties center fielder Evan Dieter (St. Bonaventure) gave the Stallions their first lead of the game with a two-run single to left field in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Ethan Conrad (Marist) provided a game-high two hits for the Stallions.

Left-handed pitcher Bryce Reimer (Bucknell) was credited with the win for Saugerties after tossing a scoreless frame in the top of the eighth, then lefty TJ Lopez earned the save after holding the visitors scoreless in top of the ninth.

Albany center fielder Vince Venditti (Saint Rose) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run, his second long ball of the campaign.

The Dutchmen will host the Glens Falls Dragons for a 6:35 matchup at Keenholts Park on Monday, while the Stallions will return to action on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Glens Falls.

Auburn DoubleDays 18, Elmira Pioneers 8

The DoubleDays (2-1) have scored a combined 32 runs during their two victories this season. After trailing the Pioneers by a score of 8-5 midway through the seventh inning on Sunday, Auburn took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh following a three-run triple off the right field wall from Christian Bauman (Brookdale). Bauman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded once again in the bottom of the eighth, and he ripped a line drive off the wall in right-center field for another bases-clearing triple to extend his team’s lead to 17-8. Bauman crossed the plate during the next at bat on a base hit from Bobby Stang (Georgia Southern) to end the game via run rule.

Auburn (2-1) will have two days off before returning to action on Wednesday against Batavia at 7:05 p.m. The Pioneers (1-2) will host the Newark Pilots on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
