A pair of PGCBL pitching kings showed why they own their respective crowns and a number of players flexed their muscles on Wednesday around the league. Here’s the night’s rundown:

Niagara Power 0, Geneva Red Wings 1 (Game 1)

If you were in attendance for the first half of Wednesday’s doubleheader at McDonough Park in Geneva and blinked, you might’ve missed the game. A 1-0 victory for the hosts came in a blistering hour and ten minutes, as Nick Serce (Alfred State)’s solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth was the only pitch that truly mattered. Jack Bohrer (Colby) picked up his first win of the summer, allowing just four hits and one walk in his five innings, while Angelo Bartziokas (Iona) got the final six outs and got his first save.

Niagara Power 1, Geneva Red Wings 9 (Game 2)

Game Two of the doubleheader was a different story, as the Red Wings exploded for eight runs in the second inning on six hits and three Power errors, highlighted by Ray Ortiz (NJIT)’s first home run of the season, and a two-RBI double for Max Hitman (Saint Joseph’s). Orion Daily (Fitchburg State) threw his own gem to follow up Bohrer’s masterpiece, allowing just five hits and the lone Power run to go with his five strikeouts in his five inning start.

Boonville Baseball Club 2, Utica Blue Sox 9 (Game 1)

The Boonville Baseball Club ran into the buzzsaw that is the Utica Blue Sox on Wednesday, as the Blue Sox put up three multi-run innings to cruise to their 13th straight win in a row. Ryan Enos (East Tennessee State) notched three runs batted in to make it 12 in the last 12 days, while Brady Short (Central Connecticut) went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to pace the offense. Jack Zupfer (University of St. Thomas) picked up his fourth win of the month to tie teammate Logan Wenzel (Central Connecticut) atop the league leaderboard.

Boonville Baseball Club 0, Utica Blue Sox 10 (Game 2)

Utica made it an early night for Boonville in Game 2, putting up four in the bottom of the sixth after their six run first to “walk off”, and extend their league record winning streak up to 14. Enos led off in the bottom of the first with a single, and Luke Odden (Wabash Valley) followed with a walk. A double steal put runners in prime position for Dewey Roden (Le Moyne), who laced a double to score both to give him six runs batted in in the last two days and make it six games in a row with at least one RBI.

Newark Pilots 12, Jamestown Tarp Skunks 2

Newark picked up a mercy rule victory of their own on Wednesday, using a pair of five run innings to overwhelm the Tarp Skunks. Six of the ten Pilots had multiple hits in the ballgame, led by Greg Kopp (Hamilton) and Kyle Gordon (Central Connecticut) who each had three. Gordon, who hit in the ten-hole, also led the way with a pair of runs batted in, tied with nine spot hitter Jake Given (UMass). Combined, the 8-9-10 hitters went 7-for-12 with seven runs and four runs batted in. Each hitter in the Newark lineup reached base at least once.

Glens Falls Dragons 3, Saugerties Stallions 8

Saugerties put six runs in the first three innings to quickly get out to a lead they would not relinquish at Cantine Field, as Brett Heckert (Pittsburgh) would hit an RBI triple and later score in the first inning. Easton Bertrand (Minnesota) would later hit a two-run home run, his first home run of the summer, and back-to-back triples from Evan Goforth (Indiana) and Garrett Michel (Virginia Tech) highlighted a four run fourth inning for the Stallions. Glens Falls would put three in the top of the seventh to cut the lead in half, before three hits each in the bottom of the seventh and eighth provided a run in each inning for Saugerties and supply the final score.

Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 5, Auburn DoubleDays 11

Mohawk Valley got out to a 4-1 lead through three and a half, before eight unanswered runs for Auburn swung the game. Kaden Kram (Princeton) hit a three-run double to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, before Luke Hanson (Virginia) hit a two-run double to give Auburn the lead in the bottom of the fifth. The trio of Lane Little (Louisiana-Monroe), Sam Duncan (Brown), and William Ray (Wake Forest) out of the ‘pen for Auburn would quiet the DiamondDawgs bats, as they combined to throw five innings, allowing just two hits, three walks, and one run while striking out six to let the DoubleDays offense grab the lead and the victory.

Amsterdam Mohawks 2, Oneonta Outlaws 5

PGCBL strikeout king Tyler Sausville (New Haven) picked up nine more Ks in seven two-hit innings to shut down the league’s highest scoring offense and give the Outlaws the win at Damaschke Field on Wednesday. Oneonta would put up four runs in the fourth to give themselves a 5-0 lead, while Amsterdam didn’t register their first hit until the sixth inning and the Mohawks top three hitters in the order went 0-for-10 with five strikeouts on the evening.

Elmira Pioneers 1, Batavia Muckdogs 6

Elmira put up their lone run of the ballgame in the top of the first, before Batavia scored two in the second and four in the third before it was zeroes the rest of the way. Brian Fry (Toledo) and Jerry Reinhart (Akron) each had RBI doubles for Batavia in the third. Muckdogs starter Nolan Sparks (Rochester) threw seven commanding innings, allowing just five hits, one run, and one walk to go with his eight strikeouts. Sparks now has the league’s lowest ERA at a minuscule 0.39 to go with his 3-0 record and 29 strikeouts in just 23 innings.
