The Oneonta Outlaws and the Boonville Lumberjacks were the only two teams to compete on Wednesday. The two squads battled during an evening doubleheader in Oneonta.
Game 1: Oneonta Outlaws 5, Boonville Lumberjacks 4… Game 2: Oneonta Outlaws 9, Boonville Lumberjacks
The Outlaws (8-10) earned a pair of one-run wins over the Lumberjacks (6-14) on Wednesday at Damaschke Field to move up to fifth place in the East Division Standings. The Lumberjacks made a late comeback attempt in both seven-inning contests, but the Outlaws were able to hold them off in both instances to sweep the doubleheader.
Game 1 – The Lumberjacks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, then Oneonta tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with RBI singles from right fielder Jarod Wade (Long Island) and first baseman Logan Waldschmidt (State College of Florida). Designated hitter Logan Haskell (Binghamton) drove in extra hitter Anthony Barone (Oswego State) with a double in the bottom of the second, then left fielder Jack Hopko (Rhode Island) ripped a single to right field during the next at bat to knock in Haskell and give the Outlaws a 4-2 advantage.
Haskell finished the game with a team-best two hits and a team-high two runs scored.
Left fielder Devonte Bailey (Alabama State) delivered an RBI single in the top of the fifth to trim Boonville’s deficit to 4-3, but then Oneonta added a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI triple from center fielder Dakota Britt (Herkimer). Boonville put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh, then second baseman/right fielder Eli Snelson (Union) ripped an RBI single to trim the deficit to 5-4. Oneonta right-handed relief pitcher Ryan Myles (Wagner) then entered the game and retired the next two hitters to strand two runners on base, record his first save of the season and secure the win for the Outlaws.
Oneonta starter Joseph Trombley (Sacred Heart) earned the win on the mound after allowing three hits, three walks and one earned run with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
Snelson recorded a one walk, one RBI, a team-best two hits, and a team-high two runs scored during the first half of the doubleheader.
Game 2 – Oneonta took a 5-1 lead after four innings, then the Lumberjacks tied the game with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Outlaws answered right back and put up four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to build a 9-5 lead.
The Lumberjacks kept chipping away with two runs in the sixth, then they scored one in the seventh to make it 9-8, but Myles recorded a strikeout to end the game and record his second save of the evening.
Oneonta left fielder JJ Devito (Molloy), second baseman Christopher Ubner (St. Thomas Aquinas), and third baseman Connor Roche (Wagner) recorded two RBI each during the victory. During the Outlaw’s four-run inning in the fifth, Devito recorded an RBI single following a leadoff triple from extra hitter Caden Marsters (Erskine), then Roche delivered a two-run single later in the inning.
Marsters and Devito both scored a team-best two runs during the second half of the doubleheader.
Bailey tallied a game-high three hits and scored two runs for the Lumberjacks during game two, while Snelson and third baseman Hugo Kohnhorst (Mineral Area) both recorded two hits and two runs scored. Boonville Catcher Joshua Lopez (Thomas Jefferson) and first baseman Santiago Jimenez (Prince George) both registered a team-best two runs batted in. Lopez added two hits.
Oneonta starting pitcher Justin Decastro (Long Island) tallied eight strikeouts with seven hits, one walk and one earned run allowed in 4.2 innings of work. Right-hander Joel Hayner (Herkimer) was credited with the win for the Outlaws after relieving Decastro and completing 1.1 innings with one earned run allowed and two strikeouts.
The Outlaws now hold a 3-1 record against the Lumberjacks. The two sides will meet again on July 5 in Oneonta.
