Five PGCBL contests were completed on Tuesday. Scheduled games between the Power and the Muckdogs, and the Stallions and Outlaws were both postponed.
Glens Falls Dragons 5, Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 1
The Dragons (7-10) led 2-1 after eight innings, then added three runs in the top of the ninth to secure their victory over the DiamondDawgs (14-6) on Tuesday at Mohawk Valley’s Veterans Memorial Park.
Glens Falls right fielder Odilio Cespedes (Bryant and Stratton) recorded a team-best two hits, including a triple, a run scored and a game-high two runs batted during the victory. Cespedes ripped the triple with two outs and nobody on in the top of the first, then designated hitter Ryan Grace (Colby) drove him in with an infield single to break the 0-0 tie. Cespedes delivered a two-run single in the top of the ninth to extend the Dragons’ lead to 4-1.
Glens Falls right-handed starting pitcher Billy Canale (Le Moyne) earned the win on the mound after allowing six hits, two walks and one run with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Right-hander Patrick Reilly (Central Connecticut) did not allow a run during the final two innings to record the save and secure the win for the Dragons.
DiamondDawgs second baseman Ethan Valdez (Spring Hill) recorded a team-best two hits during the setback, while third baseman Sam Miller (Columbia) recorded a triple and a run scored. Mohawk Valley’s starting pitcher Colin Ruddy (George Washington) tallied 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work with three hits, zero walks and two runs allowed.
Mohawk Valley and Glens Falls now both hold a 2-2 record against one another. The two sides will battle again on July 19 at Mohawk Valley.
Amsterdam Mohawks 3, Albany Dutchmen 2
The Mohawks (19-1) tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, then won on a Bryce Hubbard (Mississippi State) walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to extend their winning streak to 10 games.
Albany (6-12) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with the help of a leadoff double from left fielder Anthony Paskell (Rider) followed by a single from center fielder Anderson Moreno (Southern New Hampshire). Moreno was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the seventh, then shortstop Joe Karpierz (Xavier) moved him to third with a double. Catcher Tyler Kipp, who finished the contest with a game-high two RBI, hit a ground ball to the right side to drive in Moreno and give the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead.
Amsterdam center fielder Jalen DeBose (Florida Atlantic) was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple for the second out in the bottom of the seventh, but right fielder Zach Eldred (Brockport) launched a solo home run during the next at bat to cut the Mohawks’ deficit in half.
Amsterdam relief pitcher Josh Davis (Clemson) stranded two runners on base during a scoreless top of the eighth, then the Mohawks tied the game in the bottom half of the inning following three consecutive singles from DH Mason Swinney (Alabama), Hubbard and middle infielder Bruer Webster (Utah).
Davis tossed another scoreless inning in the top of the ninth, then Albany relief pitcher Greg Mays (SUNY Cortland) stranded an Amsterdam runner at third in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest to extra innings.
Albany started the top of the 10th with a runner on second base due to the international tie breaker rule, and they loaded the bases with two outs. Amsterdam reliever Jack Seppings (Brown), has not surrendered a run in eight appearances this summer, recorded a strikeout to end the inning, strand all three runners on base and maintain the tie.
Seppings record improved to 2-0 after Hubbard delivered the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 10th.
Amsterdam starting pitcher Brandon Peterson (NJIT) received a no decision after completing 6.0 innings of work with three hits, two walks and zero earned runs allowed with six strikeouts.
Albany starting pitcher Greg Shaw (Manhattan) held the Mohawks to two hits, zero walks and zero runs with four strikeouts through the first 6.0 innings.
The Mohawks are now 4-0 against the Dutchmen this season. The two sides will play again on Thursday at Albany’s Dutchmen Field at Keenholts Park.
Jamestown Tarp Skunks 11, Geneva Red Wings 0
First baseman Drew Garth (Washington Jefferson) and third baseman Colin Houck (East Stroudsburg) combined for eight runs batted in on Tuesday to lead the Tarp Skunks (11-6-1) to an 11-0 victory over the Red Wings (4-10) in seven innings at Geneva’s McDonough Park.
Garth delivered a two-run single in the top of the first following an RBI groundout from Houck to give the Tarp Skunks an early 3-0 lead, then Houck ripped a two-run single in the top of the third to make it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.
Catcher Alex Servilla (Nova Southeastern) drove in a run for Jamestown with a single in the top of the fourth, then the Tarp Skunks added four runs in the top of the seventh with the help of a three-run double from Garth.
Jamestown left-handed relief pitcher Tony DeLawrence (Barton), who allowed zero hits, five walks and zero runs with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work to record his first win of the campaign, pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to end the game via run rule.
Jamestown left-handed starting pitcher Evan Chaffee (St. John’s) conceded three hits, zero walks and zero runs with a strikeout through the first 3.0 innings.
Extra hitter Grady Mee (Western Michigan), center fielder Zack Kent (Wagner), left fielder Brayden Johnson (Western Kentucky), and shortstop Matt Thompson (Youngstown State) each crossed the plate twice for Jamestown during the victory.
The Tarp Skunks now hold a 2-1 record against the Red Wings so far this season. The two sides will meet again on July 9 at Jamestown’s Diethrick Park,
Watertown Rapids 6, Utica Blue Sox 4
The Blue Sox outhit the Rapids 12-6 at Donovan Stadium on Tuesday, but the visiting Rapids (7-12) drew 15 walks compared to seven for the Blue Sox (8-9) on their way to a 6-4 victory in East Division action.
Watertown catcher David McCann (Virginia Tech) recorded four walks, a base hit, a run scored and a team-high two runs batted in during the victory.
The Rapids took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with the help of an RBI single from McCann, then he recorded an RBI walk in the top of the second to give Watertown a 3-0 advantage.
The Blue Sox responded with two runs in the bottom of the second. Right fielder Wyatt Jensen (St. Thomas) drove in a run with a single to right field, then left fielder Pablo Santos (Rutgers) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field during the next at bat.
Santos delivered a one-out double with nobody on base in the bottom of the fourth, then extra hitter Kyuss Gargett (Kentucky) ripped a two-run double to center field later in the inning to give the Blue Sox a 4-3 lead. Gargett finished the contest with a game-high three hits, a walk and a team-best two RBI.
The Rapids took the back the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth via three walks, a hit by pitch, a dropped third strike and a single.
Watertown right-handed pitcher Derrike Goutremount (Utica) earned the win on the mound after allowing two hits, two walks and zero runs with one strikeout in 3.0 innings pitched in relief.
Right-hander Nick Mazzotta (Fairleigh Dickinson) recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded for the final out in the bottom of the ninth to record the save and secure the win for the Rapids.
With the win, the Rapids now hold a 3-2 record against the Blue Sox so far this season. The two sides are scheduled to meet again on July 4 at Utica’s Donovan Stadium.
The Blue Sox currently have the third-best winning percentage in East Division.
