Happy 4th of July, PGCBL fans! Five games were played today, here’s what went down:
Batavia Muckdogs 7, Niagara Power 8
The bats were going to work in this game with both teams producing ten or more hits. The Niagara Power came out with the first blow putting them up 2-1 with a homerun from the short stop, Mason Kulpa, in the second inning. The Muckdogs would go on the attack, putting up two runs and taking the lead in the 4th inning with an RBI double off the bat of Josh Leaden (Rochester) and an RBI single from Kyle Corso (Columbia University). Batavia would go on to extend their lead by scoring two runs in the 5th off a double from Tyler Cannoe (Salve Regina University), and tack on another two in the 6th inning from the bats of Alex Torres (Felician University) and Mitch Fleming (University of Montevallo). The Power answered right back with a base clearing double off the bat of Mike Huff (Western Michigan) and an RBI single from Cadyn Karl (Kansas State) to bring them within one. Niagara finally took the lead back in the bottom of the 8th and held on through the 9thto win it.
Watertown Rapids 11, Newark Pilots 3
The Rapids put on a dominant performance in Newark today, scoring 11 runs on 14 hits. Nine different players recorded hits from the Rapids lineup but leading the charge for Watertown was short stop, Clay Grady (Virginia Tech). Grady recorded three of the Rapids 14 hits including a triple and a double. Joining Grady with three hits was the DH, Tyree Bradley (Bloomfield College). In his three at-bats, Bradley acquired a double with two RBI’s, Bradley now has 27 RBIs on the season. On the mound for the Rapids, Aidan Maxwell (SUNY Cobleskill) took them through six innings, only giving up three runs and striking out two batters. Michael Norton (Cayuga CC) of the Rapids took over in the seventh and it was smooth sailing for the Rapids from there. Norton struck out four batters giving up no runs. On the other side of the diamond, Newark Pilots right fielder, Kobe Mentzer (Union College) produced two hits including a double and an RBI. On the mound for the Pilots, Aidan McGee (Union College) went out and sent five batters down on strikes. Unfortunately for the Pilots, this was not enough to beat the Rapids who were on fire tonight.
Glens Falls Dragons 1, Oneonta Outlaws 6
Oneonta would pick up the win at home today with some great pitching up on the bump from five different pitchers, holding the Dragons to one. It was Ryan Packard who held it down early for the Outlaws, striking out four batters and allowing no runs in his two innings pitched. Closing it out for the Outlaws was Ryan Finnegan with two strikeouts. On the offensive side for Oneonta, it was Mario Disso, and Devin Boone who were the heroes at the plate. Disso knocked in two RBIs with a hit, and it was Boone with a big two RBI double to break the game open for the Outlaws.
Auburn DoubleDays 2, Jamestown Tarp Skunks 5
With both teams putting up eight hits this game it was the Tarp Skunks that mad the most of them. Travis Perry (Youngstown St) was on the mound for Jamestown to start it, he pitched 6 innings only giving up two runs but striking out six batters. Perry’s biggest challenge of the night came from DoubleDays left fielder, J.C. Preacher (Georgia Southern Univ.). Preacher recorded two hits including a big RBI double in the 2nd inning. The Tarp Skunks were able to take advantage of runners in scoring position at the plate, Jamestown had five different batters record RBIs including Johnny Kampes (Goldey-Beacum) who had two hits on the day.
Albany Dutchmen 8, Saugerties Stallions 13
Two high powered offenses went head-to-head tonight in Saugerties, both teams with 14 hits apiece. The Dutchmen came out swinging in the 5th inning putting up seven runs and taking the lead due to big at-bats from Alex Brill (Ohio Dominican University) with a two RBI single, and Matt Bergevin (Fairfield University) also hitting a two RBI single. Just when the Dutchmen were finding their groove, Saugerties began to fire back scoring runs in the next four innings. It was the right fielder, Garrison Berkley (TCU) who did most of the heavy lifting with 2 hits including a triple and 6 RBIs. Two of those runs belonged to Easton Bertrand (Minnesota) who had three hits and scored three times throughout the game.
