There were plenty of fireworks around the PGCBL on July 4th eve. Here’s how the night went down around the league:

Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 3, Utica Blue Sox 4

Utica took advantage of a pair of sixth inning Mohawk Valley miscues, turning a one-run deficit into a one-run lead which turned out to be the difference. Ryan Enos (East Tennessee State) would get to second on a one-out error before later scoring on a Will King (Eastern Kentucky) sacrifice fly. Edwin Tavarez (Felician) would then reach on a dropped third strike, and four pitches later Ryan Maka (Valparaiso) would hit his first triple of the year to score Tavarez and give the Blue Sox the lead. Itai Spinoza (Elon) and David Thurman (Wayne State) would combine to get the final nine outs to secure the win.

Boonville Baseball Club 10, Watertown Rapids 7

Boonville would put up a crooked number in five of the nine innings, as eight different batters would pick up a hit. Derrick Yuengling (Bucknell) led the way with a season-high three hit night, while Zach Crampton (Haverford) led the way with three runs batted in, all coming on his third inning homer, his second of the year. Tim McHugh (St. John’s) also hit his second home run of the summer and picked up a pair of RBIs and runs in the victory. Boonville’s bullpen would throw the final five innings, allowing just four hits, two walks, three runs (only one earned), while striking out two.

Albany Dutchmen 1, Glens Falls Dragons 2

Glens Falls would pick up their first win over the Dutchmen this summer as Danny Cohen (Yale), Riley Orr (Castleton), and Matt Chase (Ithaca) would keep the Dutchmen offense to a minimum, as the trio combined to allow just three hits, one run (none earned), and seven walks while picking up thirteen strikeouts. Every batter 1-6 in the Glens Falls lineup picked up at least one hit, while Danny Moshier (Marist) picked up an RBI in the first and Anthony Ruzzo (Union) drove in what would turn out to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, his first RBI of the campaign.

Amsterdam Mohawks 5, Saugerties Stallions 1

The Mohawks would put up their five runs on just two hits across three different innings, taking advantage of the four walks, two hit by pitches, and two errors Saugerties provided. Zach Gardiner (Marshall) would extend his league wide runs batted in lead to seven (he has 32 on the summer) on his two-RBI single in the third, while Mark Black (Wake Forest) would score on a fielder’s choice and Paul Winland (Florida Southwestern) on an error in the fourth. Amsterdam added one in the seventh before Saugerties got one back in the eighth, but that’s all they could muster off the Mohawks staff that ended up tallying 14 strikeouts on the evening.

Niagara Power 8, Jamestown Tarp Skunks 13

Jamestown scored a trio of runs in four different innings Saturday night, while totaling 13 hits and eight runs batted in as a group. Jamestown led 7-0 after they got one in the first and back-to-back three run innings in the third and fourth, before Niagara made it 7-5 after a five run fifth. Jamestown responded with another three run inning to make it 10-5, before each team added three more in the later innings. Cody Bey (Wagner) would go 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs, and three runs batted in, while the 8-9-10 group of Julian Thompson (Stephen F. Austin), Royce Frazier (Herkimer), and Henry Martinez (Wagner) in the Jamestown order would go 5-for-10 with a walk, two RBIs, and five runs between them.

Geneva Red Wings 5, Batavia Muckdogs 4 (10 innings)

What started out as a quiet game- it was 1-1 through six- turned into a barnburner, as Batavia added two in the bottom of the seventh before Geneva got two of their own in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Geneva ended up getting two in the top of the tenth to take a lead into the bottom half, and Batavia got one back and got the tying run on but couldn’t bring him in. It turned out to be a memorable evening for Geneva’s Nick Serce (Alfred State), as the two-way power lefty hit a game-tying, two-run home run with one out in the ninth, and got the final six outs to secure the victory for the Red Wings.
