Nine days ago, the Mohawks suffered their first and only loss of the season to the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. A 5-run second inning that game set the tone for that game as the DiamondDawgs cruised to an 8-2 victory.
Gage Miller (Bishop State/Alabama) made sure that was not the case tonight as he crushed the fourth pitch of the game for a leadoff home run, his league leading fifth of the season.
Amsterdam tacked on 3 more in the bottom of the second. Jalen DeBose (FAU) doubled to lead off the inning. He scored on a Mason Swinney (Alabama) double and Swinney scored on a Dakota Duffalo (Utah) single. Luke Longo (NJIT) then walked with the bases loaded and forced home Gage Miller to make it 4-0.
Tyler Sausville (New Haven), who has quickly established himself as the Mohawks ace got the start and put his 0.00 ERA to the test against the league’s highest scoring offense. In the fourth, Sebastian Mueller (Quinnipiac) answered the question of how long Sausville could go without allowing a run as he took the first pitch he saw over the fence in left center for a 2-run home run. Sausville’s scoreless streak ended at 20.2 innings to start the season.
As the DiamondDawgs cut the Mohawks lead in half, Amsterdam responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Zach Eldred (Brockport) laid down a bunt single down the third base line and the resulting error allowed Mason Swinney to score. Cam Gurney (Utah) hit into a fielder’s choice which allowed Gage Miller to score his third run of the game and Luke Longo hit a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Zach Eldred to make it 7-2.
The Mohawks added runs in the fifth and sixth as Bruer Webster (Utah) drove in Jaxon West on a groundout in the fifth and Luke Longo hit a double off the wall in the sixth to score Dakota Duffalo making it 9-2.
The Mohawks would add 2 more in the seventh to make it 11-2 as Mason Swinney reached on an error as Bryce Hubbard (Mississippi State) scored and Gage Miller drove in Bruer Webster with a single.
Tyler Sausville improved to a league best 4-0 as the Mohawks improved to 17-1. He went the first 6 allowing just the 2 runs on the home run. He recorded 5 strikeouts and surrendered 3 hits and 3 walks as his ERA ballooned all the way up to 0.78 for the season. Ryan Taffe, Gio Conte and Jack Seppings each went a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Hayden Duke (UMass Lowell) took the loss for Mohawk Valley as they fell to 14-5.
Gage Miller led the way going 3-for-4 with a home run, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored and leaped up the Mohawks record books in the process. The 3 hits move him up to 79 for his career, passing Mel Rojas, Jr. for 7th place. The home run was his 14th, tying him with Ed Charlton for 3rd place. The 2 RBIs put him at 56, tying him with Brett Coker for 6th place and the 3 runs scored make it 73, passing Brett Coker for 2nd most.
Head Coach, Keith Griffin also notched his 496th win with the Mohawks in the process.
