On the final day of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft, 10 former Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) standouts were selected. In total, 15 different major league ball clubs chose 24 PGCBL alumni across the three-day event.
This year, the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners went to the PGCBL well the most often. Both teams drafted three former PGCBLers, while Arizona, New York (NL), Miami, San Diego, and St. Louis each took two. Also represented were Colorado, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Kansas City, Oakland, Los Angeles (AL), and New York (AL) with one apiece.
Eleven franchises from across the PGCBL had at least one alumnus taken. Leading the way was Amsterdam with eight, followed by Newark with four. Albany and Mohawk Valley each saw three former ballplayers drafted.
Three PGCBL alumni taken on Tuesday spent time in the league this summer. Albany catcher Adam Zebrowski, the 2021 Division III National Player of the Year and a former Newark Pilot, was picked by Atlanta in the 13th round. In 16 games with the Dutchmen this summer, the St. John Fisher College product is batting .360 with six home runs.
In the 14th round, 2021 Niagara infielder Channy Ortiz was tabbed by the Diamondbacks. The Grand Canyon University senior hit a superb .500 (6-of-12) with a .682 on-base percentage in five games for the Power in mid-June.
Amidst his second season pitching for Mohawk Valley, Jimmy Joyce heard his name called in the 16th round. Seattle selected the right-hander from Hofstra after striking out 21 in just 12.2 innings out of the bullpen for the DiamondDawgs this summer.
