UTICA, N.Y.- The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce the selection of Max Costes (Maryland) as the 2019 PGCBL Player of the Year. Costes suited up for the PGCBL Champion Amsterdam Mohawks, and becomes the fourth Mohawk to win the league's top position player honor. All three previous Amsterdam winners - John Nogowski, Josh Gardiner, and Joe Genord - would go on to play professional baseball.
Costes was arguably the most complete hitter in the PGCBL during the 2019 season, as the Maryland Terrapin finished in the top three in each of the Triple Crown categories. He hit a PGCBL-record 12 home runs, and finished third in the league with a .374 batting average and 36 runs batted in. Costes also led the PGCBL in total bases (93), extra-base hits (23), on-base percentage (.516), and set another PGCBL record with a .756 slugging percentage.
In 37 regular season games, Costes had at least two hits 14 times, including five three-hit performances. The infielder drove in at least four runs four times, and had three games with two home runs. Costes ended the season reaching base in 20 consecutive contests, and helped the Mohawks to easily claim the number one seed in the East Division playoffs.
Amsterdam's infielder likely clinched the Player of the Year honor on July 24, when he terrorized the Saugerties Stallions in a doubleheader. During the twinbill, Costes belted four home runs and drove in eleven runs as Amsterdam claimed victories of 8-0 and 16-2 over the Stallions. The home runs boosted Costes' season total from seven to eleven, allowing him to break the PGCBL single-season record of ten, which had happened three times in league history.
He then continued his production in the postseason, leading Amsterdam to a 5-0 record in the playoffs and their fifth PGCBL championship. In the Championship Series, Costes reached base in seven of his nine plate appearances, going 5-for-7 with two walks. The Terrapin drove in five runs, which included three RBIs on two home runs in Game 1. He also reached base four times in the East Division Championship Series, and posted a total slash line in the playoffs of .421/.500/1.000.
In addition to being named PGCBL Player of the Year and a First Team All-PGCBL selection in the postseason, Costes was recognized multiple times during the season. He was a two-time PGCBL Player of the Night, the Player of the Week for the week of June 17-23, and a starter in the PGCBL All-Star Game.
The announcement of the 2019 PGCBL Player of the Year concludes the league's unveiling of this season's yearly awards. Costes joins PGCBL Coach of the Year Mickey Fauvelle of Adirondack and PGCBL Pitcher of the Year Lane Miller (Indiana State) from Saugerties as this season's top honorees.
