Pencek’s No-Hitter Highlights Week 4 PGCBL Awards
NEW HARTFORD, N.Y – An historic Sunday in Jamestown and a pair of dueling batters in the East are represented in the Week 4 Player and Pitcher of the Week awards, as five players are honored for their play from June 23-29.
West Division
Pitcher of the Week: Christian Pencek, Jamestown (University of West Florida)
Player of the Week: Noah Brooks, Newark (Sienna College)
Pencek threw the first no-hitter in Tarp Skunks history on Sunday, twirling seven shutout innings in Jamestown's 4-0 win over Auburn in the first game of their doubleheader sweep of the Doubledays. Pencek didn't issue a walk, coming just an error and a hit batter away from throwing a perfect game.
This is the second Pitcher of the Week accolade for Pencek, who has been one of the best pitchers in the league through the first month. He has a 2.35 ERA through 23 innings pitched and a 0.91 WHIP with a 2-1 record in five appearances. Pencek was named Pitcher of the Week in Week 2 as well.
Brooks led the West Division with 15 total bases and slugged .833 on the week with eight hits in 18 at-bats over five games. Brooks had hits in all five games this week, including a 2-4 day with three runs batted in and two runs scored on June 27 in Newark's 7-3 win over Niagara. He hit a three-run homer in the top of the first during that game, one of four extra bse hits during the week. Brooks scored six runs and drove in six runs and improved his season batting average to .404.
East Division
Pitcher of the Week: Drew Turner, Boonville (University of Pittsburgh)
Co-Players of the Week: Tyler Jones, Mohawk Valley (George Washington University) & Jamie Zee, Saugerties (Notre Dame)
Turner earned victories in both starts for the Lumberjacks this week, throwing five strong innings in both the June 24th game against Mohawk Valley and June 29th against Glens Falls. He struck out 7 batters in each game and allowed just nine hits and three earned runs over the course of his ten innings pitched, an ERA of 2.70.
Zee blasted four home runs in seven games and drove in ten runs while batting .310 for the Stallions. He had three multi-hit games, collecting nine total hits, and four multi-RBI games. Zee homered in three straight games, including a win on June 24th against Amsterdam when his three-run homer in the top of the seventh provided insurance in a 6-2 victory.
Jones had three four-hit games and collected 18 hits while batting .529 in 34 at-bats for the Diamond Dawgs. He led the league with 12 runs batted in and 26 total bases in a week that included three doubles, a triple and a home run. Jones knocked in five runs in Mohawk Valley's 9-3 win over Boonville in the first game of a doubleheader on June 24th, and plated three runs on two other occasions. He crossed the plate eight times himself, helping the Diamond Dawgs pick up four wins on the week.
