Jamestown Wins 2018 PGCBL ChampionshipAMSTERDAM, N.Y.- The Jamestown Jammers captured their first PGCBL Championship on Wednesday night, taking Game 3 of the PGCBL Finals with a 8-6 victory over the Amsterdam Mohawks. The victory, which saw the Jammers come back from a 5-0 deficit, reversed Jamestown's fate from last season, a Game 3 loss to Mohawk Valley. Early in the contest, the Mohawks looked poised to claim their fifth PGCBL title, jumping out to a 5-0 lead through two and a half innings. The lead started with three runs in the top of the second inning. Joe Genord (South Florida) belted a two-run shot, and Justin Foscue (Mississippi State) immediately followed with a solo shot, stretching the lead for the Mohawks to 3-0. Another home run followed in the top of the third inning, as Michael Ludowig (Wake Forest) drilled a two-run homer that also scored Richie Barrella (Manhattan). Jamestown, who was the designated home team despite playing in Amsterdam, began to rally in the bottom of the third inning, using a home run of their own to get back within two runs. After a walk and a single, Sterling Hayes (Vanderbilt) clubbed a three-run home run with one out in the inning, cutting the Amsterdam lead to 5-3. Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning, keeping the Amsterdam lead at two runs, 6-4. An RBI single from Elvis Peralta (Marshall) provided the run for the Mohawks, while a leadoff single by Jeff Timko (Eastern Michigan) turned into a Jamestown run thanks to two wild pitches and a flyout. The biggest hit in the PGCBL history of the Jamestown Jammers came in the bottom of the seventh, and it gave the Jammers the lead for good. Walks drawn by Chris Rubottom (Wofford) and Brett Migliore (Canisius), followed by a popout and a strikeout, brought Chase Keng (UTSA) to the plate with two on and two outs. On an 0-1 pitch, Keng cleared the wall at Shuttleworth Park, giving the Jammers a 7-6 lead. One more insurance run was added to the Jammers' total in the bottom of the eighth. Timko walked to lead off the inning, and moved to third base on a double from Dailin Lee (UC Irvine). Ben Livorsi (St. Louis) then drove in Timko with a sacrifice fly, extending the Jamestown lead to 8-6. Ryan Boyer (Pitt Bradford) continued his stellar playoff performance with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to close out the game. Of the seven outs recorded by Boyer, five came on strikeouts, including the final out to clinch a PGCBL championship for the Jammers. In the Finals, Boyer went 2-0 with 3.2 scoreless innings of work, and struck out nine of the 15 batters he faced. For his efforts, he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the PGCBL Finals. Jamestown's victory in Game 3 capped one of the most competitive championship series in league history. The three games were decided by a combined four runs, with the tying or winning run at the plate to end each game. The Jammers are the fourth different franchise to win a PGCBL title, joining Amsterdam, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, and the Newark Pilots. |
