Red Wings Fall to Elmira 12-2 in Division SemisGENEVA, N.Y. - On Tuesday night, the visiting Elmira Pioneers defeated the Geneva Red Wings, 12-2, at McDonough Park in the first round of the 2017 PGCBL playoffs. Troy Dixon (Samford) led the way for the Elmira offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Conor Grammes (Xavier) also finished with a home run and three RBIs for the third-seeded Pioneers. For Geneva, the second seed in the West Division, Justin Etts (NJIT) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Will Simoneit (Cornell) collected an RBI in the contest. Brian Reed (RIT) left the game for the Red Wings in the third inning with some aggravation in his throwing arm. From there, the rest of the game was a collective effort from the bullpen. Geneva pitchers that combined for 6.1 innings in relief included Jordan Murphy (UT Dallas), Tyler Key (Mendocino), Devon King (Post), and Garrett Swanson (Kalamazoo). Elmira’s starter Houston Roth (Ole Miss) threw five innings of one-run ball, striking out 11 batters in the process en route to the victory on the mound.
The loss ended Geneva’s season. They closed the book on the 2017 summer campaign with a 29-22 overall record. Elmira will now play in a best-of-three West Division Championship Series against the No. 1 Jamestown Jammers, who defeated the No. 4 Onondaga Flames by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday night. |
