ONONDAGA, N.Y. - The Elmira Pioneers (24-20) scored early and often as they cruised by the Onondaga Flames (18-24) for a 12-6 victory on Tuesday night at the Onondaga Community College Baseball Complex.
Elmira opened the game with a five-run first inning off of Onondaga starter Jason Hellwig (SUNY Brockport). The Pioneers' first two runs came via back-to-back RBI doubles by Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan College) and Conor Grammes (Xavier University). An error by Alex Canty (Southeast Missouri State) allowed the third run in and a pair of RBI singles brought the lead to 5-0.
Onondaga got back into the game with an RBI single from Webb Little (Ithaca College) in the second inning and a sacrifice fly from Trey Baur (Cornell University) in the third inning to make it 5-2.
In the fourth Elmira put the game away for good with another five-run inning. The inning was capped off by a three-run home run from Ayrton Schafer (Samford University) that bounced of the arm of centerfielder Kyle Gallagher (Cornell University).
Schafer finished the game 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. For the Pioneers 3-4-5 hitters Gilbert, Grammes, and Schafer combined to go 7-13 with eight RBI altogether.
Hellwig took the loss in his season debut for the Flames. He gave up 10 runs over 3.2 innings of work. Danny Madden (St. Bonaventure University) remained perfect on the season as he got the win in his second start of the season. Madden gave up three runs over five innings for the Pioneers.
The Flames will head to Adirondack on Wednesday for a game against the Trail Blazers (14-27). Elmira will host Newark (17-26) on Wednesday.
