ONONDAGA, N.Y. - Just one day after the Onondaga Flames (14-15) and Geneva Red Wings (18-14) played a 13-inning game in Geneva, the teams traveled down to Onondaga Community College to play once again on Sunday night. After winning Saturday’s marathon game, the Flames walked off in the ninth the pick up an 11-10 victory.
Alex Canty (Monroe CC) hit a single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Stephen Bennett (Canisius College) for the winning run.
Bennett reached via the walk and then advanced to third when Webb Little (Ithaca College) reached on an error by left fielder TJ Byrd (Rend Lake College).
After an intentional walk to Anthony Scalzo (Gonzaga University) Canty hit the game winning single.
“I just tried to get my pitch. The first pitch strike [was] a little out,” said Canty. “I just regrouped and waited for my pitch, an inside fastball, and drove it down the line.”
Little hit triples in the third and eighth innings. He finished the day 2-3 and scored two runs, including a go ahead run in the eighth. Little’s big night came following a 3-21 slump in the previous seven games.
“He was struggling there for about a week, week and a half,” said head coach Ryan Stevens. “He really put his foot down on the gas and worked on being short to the ball. He made some necessary adjustments.”
The eighth inning triple was part of a 3-run rally for the Flames that gave them a 10-8 lead.
Tyler Rourke (Dodge City CC) entered in the top of the ninth trying to nail down the save.
After Rourke walked the leadoff man, Dominick Toso (Bucknell University) hit a fly ball to left field that was misplayed by Kyle Gallagher (Cornell University) and resulted in an RBI triple.
Toso was brought home on a groundout to tie the game.
Rourke got the win to improve his season record to 2-0.
Garrett Swanson (Kalamazoo College) was charged with the loss (1-1).
