ONONDAGA, N.Y. - The Newark Pilots (8-23) beat the Onondaga Flames (12-15) 4-3 on Friday night at Onondaga Community College.
The Pilots scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning after the Flames tied the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Wyatt Myers (University of Buffalo) was walked by reliever Kyle Griffen (Louisiana Tech) to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning. After Newark turned Stephen Bennett’s (Canisius College) bunt attempt into a fielder’s choice, Colin BeVard (SUNY Cortland) singled to put runners at first and second. BeVard and Bennett were then able to advance to second and third on a passed ball by catcher Po-Chaun Pan (Fu Jen Catholic). Five pitches later Sam Little (Ithaca College) hit a towering fly ball to right field that was misplayed by Over Torres (Yavapi College). Little reached second with an RBI double that brought home Bennett to tie the game.
In the top of the ninth Onondaga brought in reliever Matt Bowman (SUNY Broome). With one out Zach Santoro (Notre Dame College) hit a single into right field and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop Myers. Santoro then advanced to third on a groundout by D’Marcus Guillory (Motlow State CC) and came home on a wild pitch by Bowman.
Griffen came back out for the ninth inning and set down the Flames batters in order, to seal the win.
For Newark, Santoro finished the day 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI. BeVard led the Flames hitters with three hits and two runs scored. Griffen earned the victory to go to 3-2 on the season. Bowman was given his first loss of the season (3-1).
The loss runs the Flames’ losing streak to nine games. On Saturday, they head to McDonough Field for a 7:05 game against Geneva (18-12). Newark will host Jamestown (24-5) on Saturday.
