ONONDAGA, N.Y. - The Elmira Pioneers (15-14) defeated the Onondaga Flames (12-14) in a high scoring affair at Onondaga Community College on Thursday night. The Pioneers walked away with a 14-8 victory and racked up 17 hits in the offensive outburst.
Elmira jumped out with a five-run lead in the top of the first inning.
After a hit by pitch and a walk put runners on first and second, Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan College) knocked in the first run with an RBI single. Gilbert ended the day 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Allbry Major (Xavier University) followed that up with an RBI double and Ayrton Schafer (Samford University) drove in two with a triple.
The Flames fought back to tie the game in the fourth inning after trailing 5-1.
Dylan Nolan (Wells College) started the scoring when he brought home Kyle Gallagher (Cornell University) for his first RBI of the season.
Stephen Bennett (Canisius College) and Colin BeVard (Cortland State) then brought in runs with a sacrifice fly and bases loaded walk respectively.
Matt Carey (Ithaca College) scored the inning’s final run via passed ball.
However, Elmira’s offense was too much as the Pioneers scored eight runs over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to take a commanding 13-5 lead.
Onondaga scratched together three runs in the final two innings but were not able to get back in to the game.
Noah Hughes (Mississippi State) earned the win after throwing one and a third innings of relief. His record is now 2-1.
Emmett Dunn (Ithaca College) gave up seven runs over five innings and took the loss. He is now 1-2.
The loss pushed the Flames losing streak to eight games as they fell two games below .500. However, head coach Ryan Stevens is confident his team can turn it around.
“This is a grind, the season’s a grind. I mean we just came off an eight or nine game win streak,” Stevens said. “An adjustment needs to be made and we’ll be just fine.”
Onondaga will try and right the ship on Friday as they host Utica (8-19). Elmira travels home and will host Geneva (18-11) on Friday.
