ONONDAGA, N.Y. - The Adirondack Trail Blazers (9-13) shutout the Onondaga Flames (12-12) 6-0 on a Fourth of July game at Onondaga Community College.
The Trail Blazers got a full nine innings from starter John Hardy (Mohawk Valley CC) as he pitched his first complete game and first shutout of the season. Hardy allowed just five hits and three walks over his nine innings of work while striking out only one batter.
The Flames failed to get any baserunners past second base until the ninth inning when Gage Lanning (Canisius College) reached third on a double from Sam Little (Ithaca College). However, the Trail Blazers turned a double play on a Camillo Spinoso (Le Moyne College) fly ball and get a ground out from Webb Little (Ithaca College) to end the game.
With the victory Hardy goes to 2-1 on the season.
Chase Hagerty was handed the loss (2-2) after he allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings of work. Hagerty also finished with seven strikeouts. Head coach Ryan Stevens pulled Hagerty after he surrendered four walks in his five innings despite only allowing two runs.
“He got behind in some counts. He was sweating pretty good out there and ball was slick and he let some balls get away from him,” Stevens said. “You know he gave us a chance to win.”
The Flames ended up with three errors and allowed three unearned runs in this game as their defensive struggles continue to contribute to their six-game losing streak.
“We’re walking too many people at times but we’re making the pitches when we need to and not giving up a whole lot of earned runs,” Stevens said. “We need to do a better job defensively and minimize the errors.”
The Flames will head to Utica (5-19) on Wednesday as they try to snap their losing streak. Adirondack will try and make it back-to-back wins as they host Amsterdam (19-7) on Wednesday.
