Dragons top Saugerties, 5-4

The Glens Falls Dragons (17-26) entered Monday night's PGCBL game against Saugerties (14-28) having lost the last two meetings with the Stallions. Glens Falls was trying to turn the tide against Saugerties as the squads head into the final week of the regular season.

The Dragons sent Peter Masterson (Kutztown University) to the bump to take on Nathaniel Popiel (Dominican College).

Glens Falls wasted no time as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Robbie Knightes (St. Johns) doubled down the left field line. Nate Cardy (Gannon) followed Knightes with an infield hit and Chris Kwitzer (U. of Buffalo) walked to load the bases. Ryan Hooper (Cal-Davis) then drew a base on balls as well, which forced in Knightes with the first run of the game.

Saugerties got even in the top of the third. The Stallions sandwiched a walk in between a pair of Glens Falls fielding errors to tie the game 1-1.

The Stallions took the lead in the sixth, and once again they received help from the Dragons. Caleb Kerbs U. Maine) led off with a walk, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kerbs came around to score on a Glens Falls throwing error after a bunt by Brian Dempsey (Boston College) to make it 2-1.

The Dragons put together a solid inning half inning in the bottom of the sixth. Cardy led off with a walk and Kwitzer roped a single to right. Hooper then walked to load the bases and Drew Greenwood (Bellarmine) beat out an infield single to tie it at 2-2. Still with nobody out, Dave Hoffman (Siena) smacked a two RBI single to score Kwitzer and Hooper to give the Dragons the 4-2 lead. Josh Brown (Skidmore) also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to give Glens Falls a three run lead.

Meanwhile Masterson was cruising along, yielding only three hits in his seven and a third innings of work until being relieved by Ryan Cummings (St. Joseph, VT) in the eighth. Saugerties cut the deficit to 5-4 with two runs off Cummings with a two-run single delivered by Jacob Yish (Boston College).

Masterson earned the win, striking out one and walking four. Joe Jones (Maryville) pitched the ninth to earn the save.

Papiel suffered the loss for Saugerties.

Greenwood led Glens Falls at the plate by going 2 for 4.

Yish had a pair of hits for the Stallions.

The Dragons return home Wednesday to meet the Elmira Pioneers. Game time at East Field is 7:00 P.M.
