Elmira Wins In Extras, Get Ninth Straight Win

After a thrilling finish last night, the first place Pioneers would have to win a key division matchup against the second place Utica Blue Sox to gain a step ahead in clinching home field in the PGCBL West Championship.

It was a pitcher’s duel here at Dunn Field. The game was kept scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Utica took a one run lead on Elmira starter Sean Hjelle (Kentucky).

The Pioneers would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth. After Joe Preziuso (Canisius) worked a walk, Ty Denzer’s (Kansas) sacrifice bunt and Storm Wilson’s (Kentucky) flyout would put him in scoring position. Troy Dixon (Samford) would hit an infield single to the second baseman to tie the score at one.

Bases were loaded with Pioneers in the bottom of the ninth as they threatened to get a walk off win. However, Ryan Green (Niagara C.C.) would come in and halt the threat to take the game into extras.

After Utica scored again in the elenth inning, Phil Madonna (Siena) would hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Tyler Plantier (UC San Diego) to tie the game back up again at 2-2.

It would still be back and fourth until the bottom of the thirteenth inning as Madonna led off with a hit by pitch. After moving over to second on a wild pitch and getting to third on a sacrifice hit from Kyle Ruth (LIU Brooklyn), Connor Burns (Samford) would be sent in to pinch hit for Preziuso. Burns would send a long fly ball to right field to score the winning run on the sacrifice fly, bringing the final score 3-2 Pio’s.

The winning pitcher would be Danny Madden (St. Bonaventure) who threw two scoreless innings. Chad Burrows (Bryan College) takes the loss one earned run in one and two-thirds innings. Sean Hjelle had the no decision giving up one run on three hits and striking out eight batters.
