Dutchmen Cruise to Win Over Mohawks, 6-1

The Albany Dutchmen took advantage of an error and timely hitting to defeat the Amsterdam Mohawks 6-1 at Shuttleworth Park on Friday night.

J.J. Shimko (USC Upstate) and John Novenche (Canisius) paced the Dutchmen as both players went 2-for-4 and had an RBI. Novenche added a run scored as well.

Chris Givin (Xavier) was the only Mohawk to have a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with two singles and the lone run scored.

Albany got on the board in the top of the fourth in a game that started out as a pitchers’ duel. Cole Malloy (Butler) led off with a solo home run after taking a 3-1 offering out to left field to make it 1-0.

In the fifth, the Dutchmen poured it on. After the first two batters of the inning were set down, the Dutchmen worked three walks in-a-row and a costly error by Terrence Pinkston (Norfolk State) in center allowed two runs to score and Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican) went all the way to third. Childers scored one batter later on Novenche’s single to center to make it 5-0 Albany.

The Dutchmen tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth. With one out, Bray Curreri (St. Rose) doubled. After advancing to third on a groundout, Curreri scored on Shimko’s single to make it 6-0.

Amsterdam tried to put a rally together in the ninth, but couldn’t make it happen. Givin singled with one out and moved to second on defensive indifference. Joe Genord (South Florida) doubled to right to bring in Givin and make it 6-1, but that would be all.

On the mound, Gavin Wallace (Fairfield) improved to 2-2 on the season after pitching seven innings in which he surrendered two hits, no runs, walked one and struck out six. The loss went to Griffin Roberts (Wake Forest) who fell to 3-1 despite pitching five innings of four-hit baseball. Roberts walked three and struck out eight.

Despite the loss, the Mohawks clinched a playoff spot and their magic number is down to seven for the division. They will look to bounce back on Saturday night when they play the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in Little Falls at 6:35 p.m. The Dutchmen will host the Glens Falls Dragons in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Bob Bellizzi Field.
