Dragons Split Doubleheader with DiamondDawgs

The Glens Falls Dragons and Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs have been virtual strangers to each other this season as Mother Nature has not been the friend of the two squads. The teams met in a doubleheader at East Field in Glens Falls Friday night. Mohawk Valley (22-16) took the opener 6-3. Glens Falls (15-24) retaliated in the second game with a 3-1 victory.

In game one the DiamondDawgs and the Dragons were tied 1-1 early. Mohawk Valley struck first in the top of the first when Sean Mazzio (Wagner) singled and came in to score on an RBI double from Mac Crispino (Fairfield). The Dragons got even when Hunter Szaflarski (Lock Haven) and Griffin Neuer (Bellarmine) had back to back doubles to tie the game up after a full inning.

The DiamondDawgs increased their lead in the second. Andrew Turner (Long Island U.) led off the inning with a single and scored on a double from Kevin Radziewicz (Fairfield) to make it 2-1. Garrett Kelly (UC-Davis) and Mazzio also picked RBIs in the frame as Mohawk Valley led 4-1.

Glens Falls got a run back in the third when Szaflarski drew a leadoff walk and came in to score on a double from Chris Kwitzer (U. Buffalo) to make it 4-2. The DiamondDawgs would answer however as Justin Fowler (Dartmouth) blasted a solo home run to give Mohawk Valley the 5-2 edge.

Mohawk Valley added on some insurance in the top of the seventh when Crispino drove in Fowler to make it 6-2, chasing Jones from the mound as Ryan Cummings (St. Joseph, VT) came to finish out the game for the Dragons.

In the nightcap, Glens Falls got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Brian Granton (Colby CC) led off the inning with an infield single. Granton scored to make in 1-0 Dragons as Ryan Hooper reached on a Mohawk Valley throwing error.

The Dragons scored again in the bottom of the third to take the 2-0 lead. Brian Uliana (Rider) double and came around to score on a double by Alex Chandler (St. Rose).

That is all Glens Falls starter Andrew Kneussle (Canisius) needed as he held off the DiamondDawgs the rest of the way for the complete game win. The right-hander scattered nine hits in running his record to 3-3 on the season. Kneussle struck out two and walked only one.
Jonathan McKinney (Georgia College) took the loss for Mohawk Valley. He drops to 2-2 on the year.
