Needing only a win to secure a spot in the playoffs, the Pioneers looked to help their cause against the Newark Pilots who were also battling for a spot as well.
Lucas Denney (Seattle U.) got it going for the Pio’s in the first inning as he hit an infield single to score a run. After that a RBI walk from Ty Denzer (Kansas) and a wild pitch would bring the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
After Newark got on the board in the second, Denney would walk in a run in the bottom of the same inning to make the score 4-1 Pioneers.
A RBI double from Denzer and a RBI single from Troy Dixon (Samford) padded the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After Denney hit a RBI double to right field, Phil Madonna (Siena) scored two more with a single to center field to give Elmira a 9-1 lead.
The Pilots could only tack on one run in the top of the seventh as relief pitchers Stephen Arnsten (Manhattan), Zack Helsel (Liberty U.) and Cody Thompson (Randolph-Macon) would shut down the Pilots for good.
The winning pitcher of the contest is Elliot Lance (Wofford) who pitched six innings and gave up one run on three hits and striking out three. Quinton Logan (Hinds C.C.) would take the loss giving up six runs on three hits and seven walks.
