Two to compete in World Baseball Classic Qualifier

The 2013 World Baseball Classic is six months away however qualification rounds for the international tournament begin this month in Jupiter, Fla., and Regensburg, Germany. Two players from teams in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League will attempt to help their national sideson to the main draw of the tournament which kicks off in March. Infielder Sean Jamieson (Elmira 2009) will play for Team Canada while outfielder Jake Shaffer (Glens Falls 2007) will compete for Team Germany.

Jamieson, 23, was a 17th-round pick of the Oakland Athletics in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Canisius College product was a New York-Penn League All-Star with the Vermont Lake Monsters in 2011. Jamieson spent much of the 2012 season with the Midwest League’s Burlington Bees. The Kitchner, Ont., native appeared in 119 games for Burlington and collected 105 hits, 10 home runs, 49 RBI and 25 stolen bases en route to a Midwest League all-star selection. In late August, Jamieson was dealt by the Athletics to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Major Leaguer Stephen Drew. Sean finished the summer in the Midwest League's South Bend Silverhawks. He batted .327, drove in seven runs and stole five bases in 14 games.

Team Canada earned two medals in international competition in 2011. Canada won the bronze at the Baseball World Cup and then took home gold at the Pan-American Games. Former Amsterdam Mohawks infielder Chris Bisson (Amsterdam 2008) was a member of both teams.

Shaffer, 25, played professionally for five seasons from 2008 through 2012. He was tapped by the Seattle Mariners in the 15th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. The Athol, Mass., native spent four productive seasons in the Seattle farm system. Shaffer’s best season came in 2010 with the California League’s High Desert Mavericks. He set career highs in batting average (.338), home runs (nine) and runs batted in (78). The following summer, Shaffer was a Southern League all-star with the Double-A Jackson Generals. The former Northern Kentucky University standout signed as a minor league free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals prior to the 2012 season. He batted .262 over 77 games with the Texas League’s Springfield Cardinals before voluntarily retiring in July.

Germany won a bronze medal at the 2010 European Championships.

Canada and Germany are both scheduled to play in the Regensburg, Germany qualifying tournament at Armin-Wolf Baseball Arena. The four-team bracket, which also includes Great Britain and the Czech Republic, will be contested from Sept. 20 through Sept. 24.  The top team from the German qualifier will advance to the main draw of the World Baseball Classic in March.
