PGCBL Alumni Starring Across Baseball![]() Ernie Clement With the professional baseball season underway and college baseball entering the final six weeks of the regular season, former PGCBL players continue to be some of the best across the baseball world. Players at all levels of the game have led teams to hot starts, and continue to be major contributors on some of the nation's top squads. Ernie Clement, Cleveland Indians organization (Albany 2014)- One of the top 25 prospects in the Indians organization has gotten off to a solid start to his 2018 season. Playing for the class-A Lake County Captians, Clement has hit .306 with six runs batted in over his first eight games. He began this past week with his second consecutive three-hit game against the Dayton Dragons. The former Virginia Cavalier has hit safely in six of his first eight games, and has recorded three multi-hit games. Troy Montemayor, Baylor (Albany 2016)- Montemayor has continued to be one of the better closers in college baseball this season, logging seven saves for the Baylor Bears. This past week, Montemayor appeared in two games, working three scoreless innings. He pitched the eleventh and twelfth innings against Sam Houston State on Tuesday, and picked up his first win of the season. Montemayor also tossed a scoreless frame in the series opener against Memphis, 12-8 win for the Bears. Garrett Schilling, Colorado Rockies organization (Elmira 2015)- In his second season of professional baseball, the former Pioneer has earned a starting role for the class-A Asheville Tourists. In his first start, Schilling earned his first professional victory over 5.2 quality innings of work. The righthander allowed just one earned run to the Columbia Fireflies, and guided the Tourists to a 5-1 victory. In the win, Schilling allowed just four hits while striking out three. Logan Salow, Oakland A's organization (Elmira 2014)- Salow earned his first win of the season for the class-A Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League, coming out of the bullpen to help Beloit to a 3-2 victory on Wednesday. In the seven inning game, Salow entered in the fifth inning, and pitched the final 2.1 innings, striking out three hitters and allowing just one hit. In his first two appearances of the season, the former Kentucky Wildcat has recorded six of his eleven outs via strikeout. Andrew Rouse, Marist (Amsterdam 2016)- Marist's current five game winning streak was aided on Wednesday night by Rouse, who came up with the winning RBI in a 5-4 win for the Red Foxes over Hartford. Rouse drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh, capping a two-hit day. The former Mohawk added a hit in each of Marist's three wins over Niagara, including three runs scored and a run batted in. Anthony Lazar, Marist (Oneonta 2017)- A 6-hit series from Lazar led Marist to a conference sweep of Niagara this weekend, moving the Red Foxes to 6-3 in conference play. Lazar had two hits in each of the three games, and scored five total runs. He has either scored a run or driven in one in each of Marist's last seven games. On the season, the junior infielder has posted a .373 batting average with a team-high ten doubles and a .613 slugging percentage. Quin Cotton, Grand Canyon (Oneonta 2016)- The WAC leader in hits has paced the Antelopes to a 10-2 mark in conference play. Cotton, who was named as the No. 8 prospect in the PGCBL following the 2016 season, is hitting .347 for Grand Canyon, and has driven in 27 runs. In Grand Canyon's conference series victory over UT-Rio Grande Valley, Cotton drove in two runs in the series opener and added two hits in the series finale, both wins for the Antelopes. Solomon Bates, USC (Newark 2016)- Bates, who has been one of Southern Cal's most reliable pitchers this season, dominated Arizona on Saturday to give the Trojans a game against the Wildcats. Bates moved to 3-1 on the season following seven strong innings, where he allowed just two runs on four hits. Among eligible pitchers, Bates leads the Trojans in earned run average and batting average against, and is tied for the team lead in strikeouts. Joe Engel, Columbia (Mohawk Valley 2017)- A member of last season's Mohawk Valley championship team, Engel has carried that momentum into his junior season at Columbia. Engel is leading the Lions with 44 hits and a .344 batting average, and has been a major part of Columbia's 8-4 record in the Ivy League. Engel reached base safely in each of Columbia's four Ivy League games this week, including two hits against Brown, and helped the Lions to three wins. Drew Farkas, Hartford (Saugerties 2017)- Farkas pitched three times this past week for the Hartford Hawks, earning two victories over four innings on the mound. Farkas won on back-to-back days against Binghamton, running his season record to 5-0. Farkas leads the Hawks in appearances and wins, and has struck out 22 hitters in 22.2 innings of work with only 20 hits allowed.
