The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce its’ weekly award winners for the third week of the 2011 season. The awards are based on games played between June 27 and July 3.
Watertown catcher Larry Balkwill (Siena) has been selected PGCBL Player of the Week. Elmira’s Jordan Carter (Saint Joseph’s, Pa.) was chosen as the PGCBL’s Pitcher of the Week.
Larry Balkwill was one of the key ingredients in a 5-2 week for the Wizards. Balkwill batted .560 (14-for-25) with two home runs and nine RBI. He scored 10 runs, swatted six doubles and tripled once. The Watertown backstop cracked nine total extra-base hits, slugged 1.120 and recorded a .621 on-base percentage. He registered four multi-hit, three multi-run and two multi-RBI games. Balkwill reached base at least once in all seven Watertown contests. During the week, Balkwill raised his batting average over 230 points. Defensively, he did not commit an error in 34 total chances.
The Chatham, Ont., native recorded a PGCBL first on Thurs., June 30, when he hit for the cycle against nationally-ranked Glens Falls at spacious East Field. Balkwill went 5-for-6 with four RBI and four runs scored in a 17-6 Watertown victory. The 2009 Detroit Tigers' draft pick nearly hit for the cycle two nights before at Albany. He singled, doubled and belted a home run in a 3-for-5, three-RBI effort against the Dutchmen. Through 13 games played, Balkwill is batting .378 with two home runs and 11 RBI.
Jordan Carter bookended the week for the PGCBL West leading Pioneers with a pair of victories. Carter went 2-0 with a 2.12 earned run average in 17.0 innings pitched. He struck out 17, walked two and limited opponents to a .221 batting average. The Collegeville, Pa., native tossed the first complete game shutout in PGCBL history on Mon., June 27, against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out six in the nine-inning affair. Carter allowed just two runners to advance safely past second base. The Elmira hurler sat down 21 of the final 25 men he faced.
The Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) product followed up his complete game effort with an 11-strikeout performance over eight innings versus division-rival Newark on Sat., July 2. Overall this season, Carter is 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA. He has 21 strikeouts in 26.0 innings pitched. The right-handed hurler is the fourth Elmira player to receive a weekly accolade from the PGCBL this season.
