The Daily Rundown: June 5, 2014

By Justin Mattingly

I hope you all enjoyed the first batch of games of the 2014 season last night. To recap:

Albany 7 Mohawk Valley 3

Albany used a four-run fifth inning to pull away from the DiamondDawgs and win the first game of the 2014 PGCBL season. Doubles by James Locklear and Sean Aspinall drove in runs, which was more than enough for Dutchmen starter Jake Welch, who made his Albany debut after spending the 2013 season with the Watertown Rams. Welch finished with a line of 5.1 IP 2 ER and 2 strikeouts as he notched his first win of the campaign. The Dutchmen used a balanced attack to beat the DiamondDawgs, as each of the first six hitters in the Albany lineup scored a run.

Albany has now won every opening day game they have played in since the PGCBL’s first season in 2011. Last year the Dutchmen beat the Amsterdam Mohawks in a game that was suspended on June 5 and finished on June 20.

For Mohawk Valley, this is the second consecutive season the team has not won on opening day. Last year the DiamondDawgs lost to Glens Falls 10-6 in Glens Falls.

Newark Pilots 4 Glens Falls Golden Eagles 1

Newark scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead over Glens Falls, which proved to be the final score. As almost all big innings do, the fourth inning began with a leadoff walk to Pilot catcher Samm Wiggins. Zach Wall’s double to left-center scored what proved to be the winning run as the Pilots won their opener for the third time in four years.

Glens Falls’ bullpen kept the Golden Eagles in the game after the three run fourth. The bullpen only allowed three hits after the fourth inning to give Glens Falls a chance they were not able to capitalize on. The loss was Glens Falls’ third loss in four years on opening day.

Newark starter Robert Robbins tossed seven solid innings, allowing only one run and striking out five to pick up his first PGCBL win. The right-hander only allowed three hits and was relieved by Travis Laitar, who in-turn tossed two scoreless to preserve the win for the Pilots.

Adirondack 6 Watertown 5

In keeping with the theme for the night of big innings, Adirondack used a four-run inning of their own to defeat visiting Watertown, 6-5. Like Albany, Adirondack put up four runs in the home half of the fifth inning. Mike Carter blooped home a run to give Adirondack a 2-1 lead before Justin Korenlatt busted things open with a three-run double. Korenlatt finished his 2014 debut 3-for-4.

Despite giving up the four-run fifth, Watertown clawed its way back into the game in the sixth and seventh. Joe Deluca hit a one-out, two-run home run in the sixth to cut the lead in half before a Willi Martin sacrifice fly and Tyler Decker RBI single tied the game at five. Decker, who played in 2013 with the Rams, went 3-for-4 on the night.

Adirondack scored the winning run in the seventh inning on a Brad Jones sacrifice fly scoring RJ Devish. This was the second consecutive year in which Adirondack beat Watertown at home by one-run on opening day. In 2013, the Trail Blazers won the first game of the “Mayor’s Cup” 9-8.

Tonight’s Action:

Glens Falls @ Adirondack 6:30

Glens Falls looks to pick up their first win of the season as they travel to Boonville to take on the undefeated Adirondack Trail Blazers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.

Newark @ Amsterdam 6:35

The two-time defending PGCBL champion Amsterdam Mohawks open their season at the friendly confines of Shuttleworth Park, taking on the Newark Pilots. Newark and Amsterdam are the only two franchises to have won a PGCBL championship. Newark defeated Amsterdam in the 2011 championship, taking two games from the Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park to steal the inaugural championship. Amsterdam bounced back in 2012 and again in 2013 to control the postseason and head in to the 201 campaign as the slight favorites.

The Pilots won their season opener Wednesday night, defeating Glens Falls 4-1. Amsterdam won the only matchup between the two teams in 2013, winning 6-5 on June 23.

The game will be the first for the Mohawks on the new synthetic playing surface that was installed this spring.

Elmira @ Watertown 7:00

Elmira takes the long bus trip to Watertown on Thursday night, a place that was kind to them the last time they played. In the West Division Championship Series last year, Elmira snuck out of the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds with a 7-6 win in 14 innings, a game that was riddled with rain delays. Elmira went on to sweep the series against the Rams and face the Amsterdam Mohawks in the PGCBL Championship Series, where they lost two-games-to-one.

The two teams squared off four times in the 2013 PGCBL regular season, with Elmira winning three of the four. First pitch at the Duf is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Utica @ Mohawk Valley 7:05

Mohawk Valley looks to bounce back after an opening night loss and Utica hopes to start their season off with a win as the DiamondDawgs and Brewers clash in Little Falls. The two teams met twice in the 2013 regular season, splitting both games. First pitch at Veterans Memorial Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

*Please note that the 2014 MLB Draft is taking place on MLB Network at 6:00 p.m. Be sure to follow the PGCBL on Twitter, @PGCBLbaseball, to find out which former PGCBL alumni get drafted and to what team.
