Mohawks outlast Pioneers to win third in a row

The Amsterdam Mohawks won their third in a row hanging on at the end for a 9-7 victory over the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park. The defending champions of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League improved to 5-6 with the win while Elmira fell to 5-4.

Amsterdam led 9-2 after seven innings but a furious Pioneers rally in the final two frames brought an exciting finish with Elmira plating the game's last five runs and bringing the tying man to the plate.

Brian Ruby (Binghamton) socked his first career Mohawks' home-run. Parker Curry (Samford) and Ryan Plantier (Cornell) hit the first home-runs of the season for Elmira.

Kevin Guthrie (Brown) spun 3.2 innings of no-hit middle relief to earn the victory. Kevin is the son of former major league pitcher Mark Guthrie who threw almost 1,000 innings in his career with the Dodgers, Twins, Cubs and other teams.

Chris Kalica (Schenectedy County C.C.) halted the ninth inning rally for his first save.

Amsterdam raced out to a 4-0 lead while Elmira starter Jasper Adams (Ithaca) received little help from his defense behind him. The Pioneers committed errors on three consecutive infield grounders all with the bases loaded as Amsterdam kept plating runs and moving from station to station on the miscues.

Parker Curry teed off on Dylan Dwyer (Kentucky) for a two-run shot in the second to trim Amsterdam's lead to 4-2.

The Mohawks would score three in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-2. Ruby's two-run blast in the fifth highlighted the stretch.

Elmira's Ryan Plantier launched an impressive, towering drive well past the Chain Monster in left-field off Tayl0r Butler (LSU) cutting the lead to 9-3 in the eighth inning.

With the game seemingly put away, Elmira would score four more in the ninth to give themselves a chance for the big comeback. Chris Knott (East Stroudsburg) knocked a two-run double to left making it 9-7.

But Chris Kalica would strikeout Plantier and Andrew Nist (Temple) back-to-back to finish the game and earn the save.

Jordan Ebert (Auburn) and John Sansone (Florida State) both made their Amsterdam debuts having just arrived to the team. Ebert played in left-field while Sansone, who went 2-for-4 with a double, was at shortstop.

Amsterdam plays a pair of games at the #9 nationally ranked Albany Dutchmen Thursday at 6:00. The opener is the completion of a suspended game from June 5 in which a power-outage suspended play at Bob Bellizzi Field. That game will resume in the 8th inning of a 5-5 tie. Left-hander Matt Snyder (FMCC) will start the game after the completion of the suspended game which is slated to start at 7:05.

Amsterdam returns to Shuttleworth Park Friday at 7:05 against Glens Falls on Fireworks Night. Saturday is the New York Amateur Boxing Championships at Shuttleworth. And Sunday at 5:00 is a doubleheader vs. Newark.

Elmira returns to Dunn Field on Thursday night at 7:05 against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles.
