Mohawks Grab Third-Straight Win

The Amsterdam Mohawks made the three hour western trip to Elmira, New York on Wednesday night and came away with 5-3 victory.

Mark Leiter Jr. (NJIT) got his second start of the season and lasted five innings allowing five hits, one run, while striking out eight.

Leiter was touched with the only run against him in the top of the first on pair of hits sandwiched by a Zach Shank error at shortstop. The righty worked out of further trouble by striking out the side and stranding two runners. He breezed through the second and third innings before running into another road block in the top of the fourth when Justin Lacy lead off with a single to right field. Leiter alternated strikeouts and walks over the next four batters and got ninth place hitter Ryan Normoyle to fly out to centerfield with the bases loaded.

Amsterdam broke through against Elmira starter Mike Mahaffey in the second when Kody Ortman led off with a walk, stole second, advanced on a groundout, and scored when Matt Mack grounded out to shortstop.

The game stayed tied a one until the top of the fifth when Parker Morin lead off with his first homerun of the summer. The Mohawks added to the lead in the sixth when Shank doubled and Josh Nethaway recorded a run-scoring single into centerfield giving the Hawks a 3-1 advantage.

Kris Barone relieved Lieter in the sixth and quickly surrendered the lead. Uxa led off the frame with a single, the next batter was Aaron Hopper and he blasted a two-run game-tying homer over the left field fence.

With the game tied at three in the eighth Nethaway tagged a two-out double and Ortman drove him in with a single through the right side. Amsterdam got one more in the ninth and Abram Williams worked around a hit and two ninth inning errors to lock down his second save and preserve a 5-3 Amsterdam victory.

The Mohawks (3-2) move over .500 for the first time this season while Pioneers (2-3) fall below the .500 mark for the first time in 2011. Kris Barone was the winner and Joe Sinopoli lost it for Elmira.

Amsterdam will play a scrimmage on Thursday morning at 10:30 and they return to PGCBL play on Friday night when they host Mohawk Valley at 7:00.
