The announcement was made on Wednesday by Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President and General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik. The full release can be viewed here. Romero split the 2012 season between the Advanced-A High Desert Mavericks of the California League and the Jackson Generals of the Double-A Southern League. Overall, Romero batted .352 with 23 home runs, 101 RBI and 85 runs scored. He totaled 167 hits in 116 games and 64 of the 167 were extra-base hits. In addition, Romero boasted 50 multi-hit games (25 – High Desert, 25 – Jackson) including eight three-hit games and six four-hit efforts. The 2008 Glens Falls Golden Eagle finished the 2012 regular season third among all full season minor league players in batting average and he was just one of 19 minor leaguers to drive in over 100 runs. Romero topped the Seattle farm system in batting average. He was second among all Mariners farm hands in home runs and third in RBI. Romero, having just completed his second season of professional baseball, was named to Baseball America’s 2012 Minor League All-Star Team. The Tucson, Ariz., native was a second team selection at second base. Romero’s .352 batting average was the second-highest of all of the players tapped for the team. The product of both Pima (Ariz.) Comm. College and Oregon State was selected by the Mariners in the 12th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He began the 2012 season in the Advanced-A California League after spending all of 2011 with the Midwest League’s Clinton LumberKings. Romero scorched California League pitching for a .357 batting average, 92 hits, 11 home runs and 51 RBI over the course of 60 games. One of his season highlights was hitting a walk-off grand slam against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on May 13. Just over a week later, Romero became the first minor league player in 2012 to hit for the cycle when he accomplished the feat on May 22 against the Lancaster JetHawks. The following month, he was selected to compete in the California League-Carolina League All-Star Game. Prior to the All-Star Game, Romero was promoted to Double-A Jackson (Tenn.). Romero’s hot hitting continued over his final 56 regular season games. He belted 12 home runs, drove in 50 and posted a .342 batting average for the Southern League's Generals. Romero is presently preparing for the 2012 Arizona Fall League season. He will be a member of the Peoria Javelinas. The current Seattle prospect helped the Glens Falls Golden Eagles to a division championship in 2008. The Golden Eagles went 31-10 and won the New York Collegiate Baseball League’s Eastern Division by a margin of 4.5 games over second-place Amsterdam. Romero and the Golden Eagles advanced to the championship round of the league playoffs. Following the season, he was named first team all-league. |
