The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce that Ross Kivett (Kansas State) of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles has been selected as the 2012 PGCBL Player of the Year.

Kivett, a rising junior at Kansas State University, captured the league’s batting championship with a .401 average over 40 games played. He paced the league in batting average, on-base percentage (.497), hits (61) and stolen bases (37) despite missing the final week of the regular season due to a pre-planned trip to watch the Summer Olympics in London.

Kivett finished among the league’s top five qualifying hitters in five other statistical categories including slugging percentage (.556), runs scored (41), total bases (86), triples (three) and times hit by a pitch (nine). For the season, Kivett batted .401 with three home runs, 29 RBI, 10 doubles and 22 walks. He paced the Glens Falls Golden Eagles in nine different statistical categories.

The Broadview Heights, Ohio, native reached base safely via hit, walk or hit by pitch in all 40 games that he played for the Golden Eagles. Kivett recorded at least one hit in 35 contests and went hitless just five times. He led all PGCBL batters with 21 multi-hit games. He recorded two hits 18 times, three hits on two occasions and on July 21 against nationally-ranked Amsterdam, Kivett socked a season high five hits in a 12-4 victory.

He struck out just nine times in 188 total plate appearances. The Kansas State product ended his season on an 18-game hitting streak that ran from June 28 through July 23. Earlier in the season, Kivett posted a hitting streak of 12 games. Overall, Kivett’s batting average never dropped below .333.

Kivett’s best offensive numbers came against the nationally-ranked Amsterdam Mohawks. In six games versus Amsterdam, Kivett batted .636 (14-for-22) with two home runs, seven RBI, nine runs scored and six stolen bases.

On the base paths, the former high school hockey player stole at least one base in 23 games. Kivett stole four bases in a single game twice and added a three-swipe performance in his second-to-last game of the season. His 37 stolen bases were six more than the league runner-up and the total shattered the previous PGCBL record of 22 set last season by Newark’s Michael Bolling.

Defensively, Kivett was the starting second baseman for the Golden Eagles. However, he wasn’t limited to the middle infield. Kivett started at six different positions for the Green and Gold including catcher for two games. Against the Amsterdam Mohawks on July 13 at Shuttleworth Park, Kivett one of the top defensive plays of the season in the PGCBL. During the sixth inning, Kivett sprinted into foul territory on the first base side of the field as a foul ball quickly descended towards the box seats and the foul net, In one motion, Kivett jumped on top of the restraining wall between the field and the seats and leaned into the foul net to snare the ball before it went out of play.
