The Cleveland Indians have recalled infielder Cord Phelps (Amsterdam '06) from Triple-A Columbus of the International League. Phelpsmade this Major League Baseball debut for the Indians on Wed., June 8, against the Minnesota Twins at Jacobs Field. Phelps started at second base and batted seventh in the Cleveland line-up. (Editors' Note: He went 0-for-4 but made a nice defensive play.)

Read more about the story at the Cleveland Indians web site. According to the Tribe web site, Phelps is ready to contribute.

Cord Phelps was a member of the Amsterdam Mohawks during the summer of 2006. He led the team with 24 runs batted in and appeared in 36 contests, making 35 starts after late arrival. Phelps played in the 2006 New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game and he was tabbed All-NYCBL second team following the season. His most interesting night however was his first in the Carpet City as he arrived at Shuttleworth Park in the midst of a game between the Mohawks and Glens Falls Golden Eagles. The Stanford University product was inserted as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning. He walked as part of a game-tying rally by Amsterdam in the bottom of the eighth and then belted a walk-off double to win the game in the tenth.

The Gaviota, Calif., native was a third-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. He was a 2009 Carolina League All-Star in his first full season of professional baseball with the Advanced-A Kinston Indians. Phelps hit four home runs and totaled 53 RBI in 130 games. The fast track continued in 2010 as he split the minor league season between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus. Cord socked 59 hits in 53 games with the Eastern League's Aeros and then ripped 77 hits over 63 contests with the Columbus Clippers. He was selected as a Triple-A All-Star.

This past fall, Phelps competed in the prestigious Arizona Fall League with the Peoria Javelinas. He batted .367 and drove in 10 runs in 19 games. The former Amsterdam Mohawk played in a pair of Spring Training games for the Indians in March but began the 2011 season in Columbus. Through 53 contests with the International League's Clippers, Cord drove in 40 games, bashed seven home runs and compiled a .299 batting average.

Phelps is the second alumnus of a team in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League to be recalled by a Major League team this season. Cody Eppley (Elmira '06) was called up by the Texas Rangers in late April. He spent one month with the defending American League champions and pitched in 10 games. Cody made his Major League debut on April 23 against the Kansas City Royals. Cody currently is pitching in the Pacific Coast League for the Triple-A Round Rock Express.
