(Photo courtesy GF Golden Eagles) Danny Brennan (Saint Louis) of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles has been selected as the PGCBL Player of the Week. He is the second Glens Falls player in as many weeks to capture the top weekly offensive award in the league. Daniel Thorpe (Saint Joseph’s, Pa.) of the Newark Pilots earned the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week prize. He is the first Pilots’ pitcher to win the award this season and the third in the last two years. Danny Brennan is the starting center fielder for the third-place Glens Falls Golden Eagles. He picked up last week where teammate Ross Kivett (Kansas State) left off. Brennan played and started all six games for the Green and Gold and batted .458 (11-for-24) with seven RBI, five runs scored, 15 total bases and four walks. Brennan posted a .625 slugging percentage to go along with a .536 on-base percentage in six starts. He totaled four multi-hit and two multi-RBI games. Brennan had at least one hit or scored one run in all six Golden Eagle contests. The rising junior from St. Louis, Mo., opened the week for the Golden Eagles with three hits in back-to-back games against Oneonta and Cooperstown. Playing at Cooperstown on July 25, Brennan went 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored in a 14-11 victory. He accounted for eight runs in the game by scoring three and then driving in five between a two-run single and a three-run triple. Friday night at Shuttleworth Park, in the second game of a twin bill, the speedy center field broke up a no-hitter being thrown by Amsterdam’s Chandler Shepherd (Kentucky). He connected on an infield single with one out in the sixth inning. Brennan finished the week with back-to-back performances of two hits each in victories over Oneonta and Albany. Brennan’s first-frame RBI triple against Oneonta on Saturday night gave the Golden Eagles a lead that they would not relinquish. Daniel Thorpe threw the second nine-inning complete game of the 2012 PGCBL season on Sunday night in a 3-1 victory over the Elmira Pioneers at Colburn Park. Thorpe scattered five hits, walked two and struck out a season-high 12 in his sixth win. He forced the Pioneers to strand eight runners on base. Thorpe retired 11 of the first 12 Elmira batters he faced; the lone hit came on a solo home run in the third inning by Tyler McIntyre (Central Connecticut State). The Centreville, Va., native finished his night by striking out four of the final seven Elmira batters. Thorpe struck out the side the ninth. He set a Newark single-game franchise record for strikeouts and tossed just the fourth nine-inning complete game in team history. His sixth win tied a franchise record set last year by 2011 PGCBL Pitcher of the Year Dominick Ruscitti. Earlier in the week, Thorpe was a late addition to the 2012 PGCBL All-Star Game as a pitcher for Team Ebright. The rising junior from Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) University was the only pitcher in the game to throw more than one inning. Thorpe tossed two scoreless frames, yielded one hit and struck out two. |
