Recap - Wizards work late-game magic to outlast PilotsThe Newark Pilots (15-14) lost a heartbreaker to the Watertown Wizards (12-17) at Colburn Park, Monday night. In a game that saw endless lead changes, Watertown eventually won in extra innings. The Wizards worked some of their magic as they mounted a strong comeback starting in the eighth as they scored just one run to cut the lead to 11-9 Newark. The ninth is where the game got out of hand. Watertown scored three runs, to take a 12-11 lead. Conor Dishman (Wabash Valley CC), Donald Walter (Cal Poly Ponoma), and Jordan Enos (Holy Cross) all contributed RBIs in the team’s comeback. The Pilots didn’t go done with a fight as they eventually tied the score to force the game into extras. Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher College) provided the game tying hit as Joe Landi (Univ. of Rhode Island) was the run the crossed the plate. The game reached it’s pinnacle as Watertown took a three run lead to take a 15-12 run lead in the top of the tenth inning over the Pilots. Walter put the team up on top as he provided the go ahead RBI after singling. Brandon Roush (Texas Pan American) was the winning run for the game, but Dishman scored after a fielding error by Newark’s left fielder. The Wizards added one more run, as Derek Hagy (Texas Pan American) hit a ball to the third baseman who mishandled the ball; the error allowed Walter to score and Hagy to reach first base. The Pilots went down fighting. The Pilots were able to load the bases with two outs left in the game. With Landi up to bat, the Pilots scored their thirteenth team run as he singled in Brent Langston (Delta State). With men on third and second, Ben Bostick was put through another clutch at-bat. This time however, he was called out on strikes to end the game. Kole Mickolio (Utah Valley) earned his first win of the season. He pitched one inning and gave up one run on two hits. Cullen Babin (Delta State) took the heartbreaking loss for the Pilots; it was the first loss of the season for him. The righty pitched one and one-third innings while giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits and walked one batter. Jonathan perez (St. Mary’s) earned his third save of the season for the Wizards. Hagy, Enos, and Peter Rajkovich (San Jaoquin Delta) combined for seven of the team’s 19 hits. Each team member contributed three RBI apiece. For the Pilots, Tyler McDonald (Millersville Univ.) led the team with a game high four RBI as went two-for-five. The line score of the game was 13 runs on 20 hits for Newark and 15 runs on 19 hits for the Wizards. The Pilots will be on the road Tuesday night, as they travel to Mohawk Valley to take on the DiamondDawgs at Shuttleworth Park for a game time start of 7:05 p.m. The Wizards will be on the road as they travel to take on Cooperstown at Doubleday Field at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. |
