Recap - Golden Eagles can't close out Wizards

Glens Falls, NY – The Glens Falls Golden Eagles dropped a nailbiter to the Watertown Wizards by score of 7-5. Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles are still riding a hot streak, having won seven of their last ten.

Tonight’s game featured a pitcher from each team, both with something to prove. Cory Folk (Buffalo), for the Golden Eagles, went five and a third with five earned runs while Watertown’s Ryan Dunn (Cal Poly Pomona) went six and a third with only four earned runs.

Through one inning of play both went one, two, three, before Glens Falls pushed one across in the bottom of the second, via an RBI single from Kevin Meyers (NE Oklahoma A&M). The game remained close through, through the top of the third, before the Golden Eagles started the bottom of the third with four hits and a sacrifice to push across three runs.

After Emmanuel Forcier (New Mexico JC), Danny Brennan (Saint Louis) and Ross Kivett (Kansas State) led off with back to back to back singles, Chase Griffin (Ga. Southern) doubled, scoring Forcier, while Brennan was caught rounding third. An RBI groundout from Mike Vigliarolo (Saint Louis) plated Kivett, and a single from Alberto Morales (Clarendon) scored Griffin, which put Glens Falls ahead 4-0.

Watertown answered with three runs of their own off of Golden Eagles starter Cory Folk. A bang-bang play in favor of the Wizards started the inning, before a two run homerun from Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) cut the lead to 4-2. Watertown tacked on another run, to cut the lead to 4-3, after three and a half innings of play.

No runs were scored in the fifth, but the sixth inning provided some offense. Folk was removed, in favor of Jake Doller (Kansas State), who came in with the bases loaded. Peter Rajkovich (San Joaquin Delta) battled from being down 0-2 and connected for a double down the left field line scoring two and giving the Wizards their first lead of the game.

The Golden Eagles then answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Alberto Morales drove his second home run of the season off the scoreboard to even the game at five.

The seventh inning would prove to hold the winning run. Cipolla was the hero for Watertown, when he doubled to score Donald Walter (Cal Poly Pomona) for the eventual game winner. Then, for added measure, Cole Gleason (Wabash Valley) hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Hagy.

The Golden Eagles would come close in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jared Cheek (Ga. Southern) flew out to center with Morales tagging from third. Morales was thrown out at the plate and what was originally no outs with the bases loaded quickly turned into two outs with runners on first and second.

Dunn gets his first win of the season and Jonathan Perez (St. Mary's, Texas) gets his second save, while Folk takes his first loss of the season.

The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow night to try and rebound against the Albany Dutchmen at 5 pm. The Golden Eagles return home on Monday for Baseball Card Giveaway Night, so be sure to head to East Field to collect your trading cards. This is the last home game until July 16th, so don’t miss this exciting evening.
