Recap - Stagg and Schafer pitch Albany to win over NewarkThe Albany Dutchmen played their third and final home game in a row at Bellizzi Field on Friday and defeated the visiting Newark Pilots 5-2. The Dutchmen were able to do so behind an outstanding pitching performance by lefty starter David Stagg (Heartland C.C.) who went seven innings for Albany. Stagg had the strike out pitch working all night long as he scattered six hits while striking out 11. He finished with a terrific strikeout-to-walk ratio as he only allowed one free pass all night long. Stagg improves to 2-1 on the season, while Albany improves to 7-6. Ricky Schafer (Cypress) ensured that the Dutchmen improved their win streak to two as he worked two scoreless out of the bullpen to earn his second save of the season. He struck out two, while allowing two hits to preserve the well-deserved win for Stagg. The Dutchmen were paced at the plate by Zach Remillard (Coastal Carolina) and Adam Young (UC Davis) who each had two hits. Young delivered a big RBI single in the 1st inning and singled again in the 4th. Remillard singled, doubled, and stole a base out of the 3-spot for Albany. Newark had RBI hits from Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher) and Josh Crowdus (Delta State), and threatened by bringing up the tying run in the 9th, but Schafer was able to get a strikeout to end the game. Albany will take on Glens Falls on the road tomorrow night, as they look to make it three in a row. They will be back at home on Sunday at the special start time of 5pm. |
