Watertown allowed four unearned runs and lost to Mohawk Valley 9-2. The Wizards fell to 5-7 on the season while the Diamond Dawgs improved to 4-7.
It was a pitchers duel early on as Watertown held a 2-1 lead thanks to two errors by Mohawk Valley. In the fourth it was the Wizards turn to make the mistakes as three runs scored off back-to-back Sal Ciccone (Fairfield) errors at shortstop. The Diamond Dawgs would lead the rest of the game.
Chris Cruz (Cornell) extended the lead in the fifth with a solo home run to right. Three in the ninth on three singles and two stolen bases allowed the Diamond Dawgs to pull away.
Both starting pitchers gave impressive outings, striking out 20 batters between them. John Means (Fort Scott CC) (1-1) got the win. He went gave up no earned runs in 6.2 innings and struck out eleven. Rene Solis (St. Mary’s (TX.)) (1-1) took the loss. He gave up six runs (three earned) in seven innings and struck out nine.
Watertown hit the road to take on Albany Thursday while Mohawk Valley is home to Elmira. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:05 PM.
