Solis (Watertown 2012) Is Finalist For D-II Player of Year Award![]() Photo courtesy St. Mary's University/Antonio Morano Solis and the other five finalists for the Tino Martinez Award were selected from a group of 55 semifinalists that was compiled by a panel of media members, sports information contacts and coaches. The panel will select an award winner from the six finalists. The winner of the top individual prize in NCAA Division II baseball will be announced after the conclusion of the Division II championship tournament which will run from May 26 through June 2 in Cary, N.C. An Internet fan vote will also be held through TinoMartinezAward.com beginning on Wed., May 23. Solis, a native of San Antonio, Texas, and the St. Mary’s Rattlers are bound for the Division II championships after capturing the South Central Region crown. The second nationally-ranked Rattlers boast a 48-9 overall record. St. Mary’s dispatched of Central Missouri in the South Central Region championship game on Sunday. Through 15 appearances this season, Rene is 13-2 with a 1.55 earned run average. He has struck out 106 batters in 110.0 innings pitched and thrown seven complete games, two of which were shutouts. Opponents against the St. Mary’s southpaw have compiled a .184 batting average. The sophomore entered the NCAA playoffs tied for the national lead in victories and was 10th in strikeouts. Earlier this month, he was named All-Heartland Conference first team. He pitched once in the regionals against Southern Arkansas. The little lefty scattered seven hits over eight innings, yielded two runs and struck out seven in a 5-2 Rattlers win. In two postseason games, Solis is 2-0 with a 1.05 ERA. Solis has pitched at least six innings in 14 of his 15 starts. The left-handed hurler has held opposing teams to one run or less 10 times. He spun a complete game five-hit shutout in the Heartland Conference tournament against Newman on May 12. Eleven times, Solis has pocketed at least six strikeouts and he fanned a season-high 14 against Texas-Permian Basin on Feb. 18. |
