Six Earn Weekly Awards

Five players from teams in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League have earned weekly awards from their respective conferences for the period ending April 15. A sixth player, who will compete in the PGCBL this coming season, was honored with a weekly national award.

Georgia State University senior Ben Marshall (Watertown 2009) was selected as the Pitcher of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association. Marshall pitched a complete game one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over William & Mary on Apr. 14 in Atlanta. He out-dueled W&M’s Brett Koehler (Glens Falls 2010) who also tossed a complete game. Marshall yielded a third-inning single up the middle, walked two and struck out six in his third complete game effort. He faced three batters over the minimum and set down 10-straight Tribe hitters to end a 118-pitch outing. The GSU senior has won two CAA Pitcher of the Week prizes this season.

Harvard University sophomore shortstop Jake McGuiggan (Watertown 2011) has been chosen as the Ivy League Player of the Week. McGuiggan helped the Crimson to a 3-3 week overall with a win over Boston College in the Beanpot and a road series split at Ancient Eight rival Yale. The sophomore batted .458 (11-for-24) with four runs scored, four RBI and three doubles. He had at least one hit in five of six games and collected four multi-hit performances. The Hingham, Mass., native went 4-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and one double in a 5-2 victory against BC. The following day, McGuiggan smacked two hits and drove in one run against Boston-area rival Northeastern. The sophomore pounded out five hits including two doubles in a four-game series at Yale.

For the second time this season, Marist College senior Chad Gallagher (Mohawk Valley 2009) has been tapped as the Pitcher of the Week by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Gallagher pitched a career high 9.1 shutout innings in a no decision against MAAC foe Siena on Apr. 14 in Poughkeepsie. Gallagher scattered six hits, walked three and struck out three in a contest that saw Siena outlast Marist, 1-0, in 11 innings. Gallagher was opposed by Siena's Ryan Poplawski (Watertown 2009), C.J. Sohl (Albany 2010-2011) and Neil Fryer (Glens Falls 2011). The Marist senior retired the first nine batters he faced and allowed just one Saints runner to advance safely past second base in a 97-pitch performance. Gallagher was taken out with a runner on first and one out in the 10th inning.

College of the Holy Cross junior Patrick Puentes (Watertown 2011) has been honored as the Player of the Week by the Patriot League. Puentes helped Holy Cross to a 3-3 week that included a 3-1 series victory over Patriot League opponent Navy in Annapolis, Md. The junior leftfielder batted .440 (11-for-25) with one home run, four RBI, seven runs and two doubles over six games for the Crusaders. He had at least one hit in all six games and totaled four multi-hit performances. Puentes began the week with a pair of two-hit games against Central Conn. State and Dartmouth. He smashed a home run against the Big Green and accounted for both of the ‘Saders runs in a 4-2 setback. At Navy, Puentes belted seven hits and scored five times. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in the second game of the series and then he crossed the plate thrice in the finale.

The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference has selected MIT senior Torre Swanson (Albany 2009) as the conference Pitcher of the Week. Swanson, who won the his first NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week prize on Apr. 8, fired a complete game one-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over conference opponent Clark (Mass.) on Apr. 14 in Cambridge. Swanson walked none, struck out six and opposed 25 batters in a game that lasted 85 minutes. The lone hit recorded by the Cougars came in the fifth inning on an infield bunt single to first base. Swanson responded by setting down the next seven Clark batters to end the seven-inning contest. The Redding, Calif., native tossed a three-hit shutout against Springfield on Apr. 7. He has not allowed a run in two April starts.

Heartland Comm. College freshman David Stagg (Albany 2012) has been named the Division II National Pitcher of the Week by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Stagg pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out a career-high 11 in a 13-0 run-rule win at 18th-ranked Lincoln (Ill.) Comm. College on Apr. 11. He yielded two singles, walked two and faced 21 batters in six innings. Stagg recorded 11 of 18 outs via strikeout. In three starts for the Hawks, Stagg is 3-0 with a 2.76 earned run average and 18 strikeouts in 16.1 innings pitched.
