Gavlik (Mohawk Valley 2009), North Florida Great West Conference - Player of the Week Goose Kallunki (Cooperstown 2010), Utah Valley Ivy League - Player of the Week Joe Sclafani (Amsterdam 2009), Dartmouth Mid-American Conference - East Division Pitcher of the Week Andrew Brown (Glens Falls 2009), Akron Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference - Player of the Week Eddie Sorondo (Mohawk Valley 2012), Delaware State Southeastern Conference - Co-Player of the Week Luke Maile (Amsterdam 2010-2011), Kentucky Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference - East Division Pitcher of the Week Nick Umberger (Oneonta 2010), Shippensburg American Southwest Conference - East Division Player of the Week Chance Brown (Newark 2011), UT Dallas State University of New York Athletic Conference - Pitcher of the Week Chris Chismar (Cooperstown 2011), New Paltz University of Maine freshman Scott Heath (Amsterdam 2012) earned the America East Rookie of the Week prize after helping the Black Bears to an undefeated week with five victories in five games. Heath batted .476 (10-for-21) with seven RBI, eight runs scored, three doubles and four walks. He collected four multi-hit games in a four-game conference demolition of UMBC and drove in at least one run in all five Maine contests. Heath walked three times against Husson on Apr. 4 and then he went 10-for-19 (.526) at UMBC as the Black Bears ran off 76 runs in four games including a school-record 32 in a single tilt. The Westbrook, Maine, native had his best game in the second game of the UMBC series when he compiled four hits in five at-bats, scored four times and drove in one run. The Atlantic Sun Conference honored University of North Florida senior T.J. Gavlik (Mohawk Valley 2009) as the A-Sun Player of the Week. Gavlik led the Osprey to an upset victory over top-ranked Florida on Apr. 3 and North Florida finished the week with a 3-1 mark. The senior hit .500 (8-for-16), drove in four runs and scored five. He boasted at least two hits and one run in all four contests. Against the Gators, Gavlik cracked a pair of hits including an RBI triple in the seventh inning and drove in a career high three runs. The native of Hong Kong, China, tallied four times in a three-game A-Sun series at East Tennessee State and socked six hits. Gavlik began the week batting ninth in the UNF batting order; he finished it batting lead-off against ETSU. Utah Valley University senior Goose Kallunki (Cooperstown 2010) has been named the Player of the Week by the Great West Conference. Kallunki slugged the Wolverines to an undefeated week (5-0) that included an upset victory over fourth-ranked Arizona. Goose slammed three home runs, totaled 12 RBI and batted .526 (10-for-19) in five games. He compiled four multi-hit and three multi-RBI performances. The Orem, Utah, native launched a solo home run and later added a two-out RBI single versus Arizona. Kallunki opened a four-game series against North Dakota with four hits including a walk-off double in the 10th inning that propelled Utah Valley to a 5-4 victory. The next day, he belted a grand slam and plated five scores in a 20-run explosion. The Wolverine first baseman scored three runs and drove in three runs in the series’ finale on Sunday. The Ivy League has honored Dartmouth College senior Joe Sclafani (Amsterdam 2009) as its Player of the Week. Sclafani led the Big Green to four victories in five games and two of the four wins came in a doubleheader sweep of Ancient Eight foe Penn. Sclafani batted .476 (10-for-21) with one home run, six RBI, seven runs scored, three doubles, two triples and two walks. He had at least two hits, one run and one RBI in four of the five contests. Six of his 10 hits were extra-base hits and Sclafani set a school record with his 17th career triple on Apr. 7 against Penn. The senior was responsible for five of six tallies Dartmouth recorded in a 6-3 victory over the Quakers; he hit for the cycle in the twin bill overall and finished the day with five hits. University of Akron senior Andrew Brown (Glens Falls 2009) has been tapped as the East Division Pitcher of the Week by the Mid-American Conference. Brown twirled a complete game two-hit shutout for the Zips in a 3-0 conference victory over Bowling Green on Apr. 6. Brown yielded a single through the right side in the fourth and a wind-aided double in the sixth. He walked two and struck out six in his fourth victory of the season and second-straight complete game. The senior faced four batters over the minimum and he set down 11 of the final 12 BGSU batsmen. Delaware State University sophomore catcher Eddie Sorondo (Mohawk Valley 2012) was chosen as the Player of the Week by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The second-year receiver backstopped the Hornets to a three-game MEAC sweep of Norfolk State. Over four games, Sorondo batted .636 (7-for-11) with four RBI, four runs scored and five walks. He had at least one hit in every game and walked in three of DSU’s four tilts. The Jersey City, N.J., native ripped two hits against Lehigh in a mid-week game and then potted five hits against Norfolk State. He opened the series with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored and then ended it by reaching base four times via a single and three walks in the finale. University of Kentucky junior catcher Luke Maile (Amsterdam 2010-2011) has been named Co-Player of the Week by the Southeastern Conference. He shared the award with Alabama senior outfielder Taylor Dugas. Maile mashed his way to a monstrous week at the plate in only four games. The UK backstop batted .471 (8-for-17) with three home runs, six RBI, six runs scored and three doubles. He accounted for 20 total bases and six extra-base hits against Dayton and nationally-ranked Ole Miss. Maile clouted two belts and drove in four to start the week versus UD. He doubled and tallied twice in the opening game of the Ole Miss series; his seventh-inning double led to the eventual game-winning score. Luke ended the week and the three-game set with two hits including a home run and two RBI. For the second time this season, Shippensburg University senior Nick Umberger (Oneonta 2010) has been chosen as the East Division Pitcher of the Week by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Umberger pitched a complete game four-hitter as Shippensburg ended first nationally-ranked West Chester’s 20-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory on Apr. 6. The senior scattered four hits, walked two and struck out seven in the seven-inning contest. He faced five batters over the minimum and retired the side in order in four of his seven frames. Umberger allowed just one West Chester runner to safely advance past second base. He was also named NCBWA Division II Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week. The American Southwest Conference has selected University of Texas Dallas senior outfielder Chance Brown (Newark 2011) as the ASC East Division Player of the Week. He was also named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week. Brown powered the UT Dallas Comets to a three-game conference sweep of visiting Mississippi College. He batted .700 (7-for-10), drove in five runs and scored twice. Brown was hit by a pitch three times, walked once and reached base in 11 of his 14 plate appearances. The senior cracked at least one hit in all three contests and recorded multiple hits in two of the three games. Brown’s best game came in the opener with Miss. College. He reached base six times in six at-bats on four hits and two HBP and he drove in four runs in a 15-5 victory. For the second time this season, New Paltz junior Chris Chismar (Cooperstown 2011) has been tapped as the Pitcher of the Week by the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Chismar struck out a career-high 14 over nine innings in a no decision against conference rival Oneonta State. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and threw 97 strikes in 129 pitches. Chismar was taken out after nine innings with the game tied at two. |
