Mohawks Round Out Coaching Staff

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – Amsterdam Mohawks general manager Brian Spagnola and head coach Keith Griffin have announced the hiring of two assistant coaches for the 2012 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League season. Amsterdam native and 2011 Amsterdam Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Robby Hisert and Max Hutson will be joining Keith Griffin in the Mohawks’ dugout this summer.

Hisert is an assistant varsity baseball coach at Amsterdam High School. He starred two varsity seasons for the Amsterdam Rams as a prep catcher and outfielder. Hisert was the Amsterdam Recorder High School Baseball Player of the Year in 2003 as a senior and he was tabbed All-Big 10 first team. Hisert played two seasons of collegiate baseball at nearby Schenectady County Community College and started every game in his JUCO career. He batted .418 as a sophomore and racked up first-team accolades in the Mountain Valley Conference and NJCAA Division III Region III. In addition, Robby was chosen as SCCC’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2005. Two years later, Hisert, a dual citizen of both the United States and Italy, went abroad and spent the 2007 season playing for Parma of the Italian Baseball League.

The Amsterdam native signed with the U.S. Military All-Stars traveling team in 2010. As a member of the “Heroes of the Diamond,” Hisert batted .533 over the course of the season. He took part in the second annual Cooperstown Hall of Fame Classic at Doubleday Field and homered in his first at-bat for Team Feller. The Military All-Star finished the game 2-for-2. Last summer, Hisert returned to the U.S. Military All-Stars for their exhibition game with the Amsterdam Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park.

Hutson is in his first season as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Hesston (Kan.) College. The Terre Haute, Ind., native pitched collegiately at Missouri Valley Conference powerhouse Wichita State University from 2005 through 2009. Hutson, who missed all of the 2008 season due to Tommy John surgery, made 50 career appearances for the Shockers and earned eight victories. As a junior, Max fired five shutout innings and struck out five in a non-conference game against Big-12 power Oklahoma State. He won three games in each of his first two seasons and finished his collegiate career with an 8-5 record.

Indiana State University brought in Hutson as an assistant coach in 2010. The Sycamores responded by posting the second-lowest ERA in the Missouri Valley Conference (4.61). ISU pitchers led the MVC with a .257 opponents’ batting average. In his second season at Indiana State, Hutson guided his pitchers to a lower ERA (4.33) and 29 overall victories, two of which came over Wichita State.

The Amsterdam Mohawks, proud members of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, open their 2012 season on Wed., June 6, against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes at historic Doubleday Field. The Mohawks play their home opener on Thurs., June 7, against the Albany Dutchmen. First pitch at Shuttleworth Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
