Northwestern University first-year Luke Dauch (Glens Falls 2012) was named the Co-Freshman of the Week in the Big 10 conference. He shared the award with Illinois rookie pitcher John Kravetz. Last weekend, Dauch and the Northwestern Wildcats competed in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Florida. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native started all three games of the tournament for NU and turned in a .714 (5-for-7) batting average. Dauch scored three runs, drove in two, swatted two doubles and swiped two bases. Three of his seven hits went for extra bases. The Northwestern rookie had at least one hit in all three games and posted a 2.064 OPS rating.

University of North Carolina Asheville junior Billy Creighton (Albany 2011) was selected by the Big South Conference as the Choice Hotels Player of the Week. Creighton, a transfer from Schenectady (N.Y.) Comm. College, helped the Bulldogs to a three-game road sweep of North Carolina Central. The starting designated hitter for UNCA batted .600 (6-for-10) with three home runs, nine RBI, nine runs scored and five walks. He scored three runs in each game of the three-game set and drove in at least two runs per game. Creighton recorded at least one hit in all three games and he finished the series with a two home run, five-RBI game in a 10-2 victory.

The Colonial Athletic Association split its Pitcher of the Week award between William & Mary senior Brett Koehler (Glens Falls 2010) and Georgia State senior Ben Marshall (Watertown 2009). Koehler turned in a masterful performance in the first game of the season for the Tribe against non-conference opponent Rhode Island. He threw a one-hit shutout over seven innings and struck out five in a 2-1 triumph. Koehler retired 21 of the 25 men he faced and allowed just three URI runners to safely advance past first base. On the same day, Marshall threw a complete game one-hit shutout in a 7-0 victory over Western Illinois as part of a doubleheader. The Georgia State senior walked two, struck out six and sat down 21 of the 24 batters he opposed. He earned his first career win in his first start since the 2010.

Siena College junior Justin Brantley (Albany 2010-11) earned the very first Pitcher of the Week prize in 2012 from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.  Brantley and Siena Saints opened the season with a four-game series on the road at Tulane of Conference-USA. The third-year starter struck out seven batters over seven strong innings in what ended up as a narrow loss to the Green Wave. Brantley yielded two scores in the first and then responded by blanking the home team over the next five innings.  He was charged with three earned runs over seven innings and scattered nine hits. The Siena starter left the contest with the score tied at four apiece.

Central Michigan University senior catcher William Arnold (Oneonta 2010) earned both the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week award and the NCBWA Div. I National Player of the Week honor. Arnold turned in a monster weekend at the plate in a three-game series at Troy. The CMU backstop batted .545, slugged four home runs, drove in eight runs and scored eight runs. The senior belted at least one blast and drove in two runs apiece in all three games. Arnold closed out the series with a flourish; he went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in a 14-7 victory. Defensively, he was flawless in 27 chances and threw out one runner attempting to steal.

LeMoyne College senior Derek Zielinski (Amsterdam 2010) was named the Pitcher of the Week by the Northeast-10 Conference after LeMoyne’s doubleheader sweep of nationally-ranked Mount Olive College. Zielinski started the second game of the twin bill and pitched the Dolphins to a second victory. He struck out a career-high 11 in a complete game five-hitter. The LeMoyne started retired the side in order in five of seven innings. He closed the contest by striking out eight of the final 13 hitters he faced.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference did not hand out a Pitcher of the Week award for games played last week. However, Shippensburg College senior starter Nick Umberger (Oneonta 2010) racked up the NCBWA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week accolade. The Shippensburg senior hurled a two-hit shutout over seven innings and struck out eight in a 1-0 victory over Barton College. Umberger carried a no-hitter into the fifth and had it end on a bunt single. He walked one batter and struck out at least one Barton hitter in six of seven innings pitched.
