Former Amsterdam Mohawks infielder Chris Bisson (2008) was part of Canadian international baseball history last month at the 2011 Baseball World Cup and Pan-American Games. Team Canada claimed a share of the bronze medal at the IBAF Baseball World Cup in Panama City, Panama and then the Canadians captured the gold medal at the Pan-American Games in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico. The medal-winning performances marked the most successful month for the Canadian Senior National team in the program’s history.

Bisson, a second baseman in the San Diego Padres farm system, appeared in eight games and started four for Canada at the Baseball World Cup. The Orleans, Ont., native smashed a pinch-hit home run in his first at-bat of the tournament against Greece. He made his first start against eventual tournament champion Netherlands on Oct. 8 as a lead-off hitting second baseman. Bisson went 1-for-3 with two walks and a sacrifice bunt in a 5-4 win in extra innings. The next day against Team USA, the former University of Kentucky infielder hit lead off and went 1-for-3 with two walks, one run scored, a double and one stolen base. The Padres prospect had his best game in Panama in the second round of the tournament against Venezuela. In a 7-0, seven-inning victory, Chris went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Team Canada played in just four games at the Pan-American Games against Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico and the United States. Bisson started in left field and batted lead-off in Canada’s tournament opener against Puerto Rico. Canada capped off the tournament by defeating the United States, 2-1, in the championship game.

The 22-year-old spent the 2011 minor league season with the Midwest League’s Fort Wayne TinCaps. He batted .261, drove in 43 runs and swiped 21 bases in his first full professional season. The San Diego Padres selected Bisson in the fourth round (124th overall) of the 2010 draft.
