Week 3 Player and Pitcher of the Week Named

During each week of the 2019 PGCBL season, the league office will recognize one position player and one pitcher as the League's Player and Pitcher of the Week. This past week, a member of the surging Amsterdam Mohawks belted three home runs to pace his team, while a position player in Saugerties stepped on the mound and dominated for the Stallions.

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce the selection of Amsterdam's Max Costes (Maryland) as the PGCBL Player of the Week, and Saugerties' Blake Crossing (Dartmouth) as the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week.

Costes is the first Mohawk to win the league's Player of the Week award since 2017, when T.J. Collett (Kentucky) and Liam Wilson (Canisius) shared the award in the third week of the season. Crossing is just the second Saugerties player to win a weekly award in franchise history, joining 2015 pitcher Phil Zdanowski (Saint Rose), who was named Pitcher of the Week in the final week of the team's inaugural season.

Costes was a key part of an Amsterdam attack that scored nearly eight runs a game on the week. The Maryland freshman hit safely in all six Mohawk games on the week, and recorded three multi-hit performances. His keynote performance came on Tuesday, when he belted two home runs and drove in five runs in Amsterdam's 10-7 victory over Mohawk Valley. During Amsterdam's six games on the week, Costes hit .417 with ten hits, three home runs, and nine runs batted in. He drove in runs in four of the six games, including a homer and two RBIs in a Saturday win against Watertown.

At Maryland this spring, Costes burst onto the scene in his freshman season. The Baltimore native hit 15 home runs and drove in 49 runs for the Terrapins, and started every game while hitting .266. For his efforts, Costes was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, as well as a First Team All-Big Ten selection at first base.

Crossing stepped on the mound for the first time this season during the past week, and supplied seven stellar innings for the Stallions. His work started on Monday, when he tossed four shutout innings against the Oneonta Outlaws, striking out five hitters. He was called upon again on Saturday, when he threw the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings without allowing a run, and picked up the victory at East Field against the Glens Falls Dragons. On the week, Crossing struck out seven hitters in seven scoreless innings, did not walk a batter, and allowed just four hits.

The Dartmouth junior was a mainstay in the lineup for the Big Green this spring, starting 30 games and appearing off the bench in six more. He drove in eight runs and scored 14 more, hitting .243 over 107 at bats. Crossing also stepped on the mound three times, pitching against Penn, Brown, and Middlebury for a total of three innings.

The PGCBL is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Costes and Crossing over the last seven days. The league will continue to honor the best performances in the PGCBL throughout the summer with both nightly and weekly awards.
