PGCBL Daily Roundup: July 25, 2018A pair of crucial doubleheaders are on the PGCBL schedule on Wednesday, as nearly every team in the league is still alive in the playoff race. Tuesday's Results Wednesday's Scheduled Games Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at Jamestown Jammers Perhaps the biggest games of the day will be played in Jamestown, as the race for the PGCBL Central and the top overall seed will be altered. Mohawk Valley currently holds a one game lead over Utica in the PGCBL Central, while Jamestown's edge over Amsterdam for the number one seed has been cut to two games. With a doubleheader on the schedule, a sweep for either team could go a long way into ensuring that team's position. Ryan Rodriguez (UC Davis), who holds a 2-1 record, will start for the DiamondDawgs in one of the two games. Geneva Red Wings at Newark Pilots An all-important doubleheader is scheduled for Colburn Park on Wednesday night, as both the Pilots and the Red Wings are in the thick of the playoff race. Geneva holds a two-game lead over the Elmira Pioneers for second, which would ensure the Red Wings a playoff spot regardless of who gets the top seed. Newark is in fourth place, but is just two games behind Elmira for third, which could come into play if Jamestown gets the top seed. Wednesday's doubleheader makes up a game from June 24, which was also postponed on July 3. Glens Falls Dragons at Albany Dutchmen After a shutout victory over the Saugerties Stallions on Tuesday evening, the Albany Dutchmen are closing in on a playoff spot, with their magic number sitting at three. With less than a week to go in the season, the Glens Falls Dragons will look to play spoiler, as the Dragons are set to play Albany, Amsterdam, or Saugerties in each of their next four games. The Dutchmen have won two consecutive games over the Dragons, and hold a 5-3 lead in the season series. The pitching matchup will see Brandon Budlong (Saint Rose) face off with Deaven Phillips (Tampa). Utica Blue Sox at Amsterdam Mohawks The Amsterdam Mohawks can become the second team to clinch a spot in the PGCBL Playoffs with a victory on Wednesday night. With Saugerties idle, Amsterdam can only clinch a playoff spot today with a victory. The Utica Blue Sox, who were 5.5 games back in the PGCBL Central two weeks ago, can take over first place in the division with a win and a pair of Mohawk Valley losses. Amsterdam's Zane Stephens (Mississippi State) will take the mound at Shuttleworth Park, as the Bulldog looks to pick up his fourth win of the season. Watertown Rapids at Oneonta Outlaws Despite two consecutive defeats, the Watertown Rapids sit just 2.5 games out of first place in the PGCBL Central, and 1.5 games behind Utica for a playoff spot. The Rapids will head on the road for a game with the Oneonta Outlaws, who have quietly kept themselves in contention. The Outlaws sit just 3.5 games behind Saugerties for third place in the PGCBL East, which still could yield a playoff spot. The only previous meeting between the teams was a 13-0 Oneonta win in Watertown on June 15. |
